Oppo Anyone? (BDP-95)

Dan did a superb job of comparing his Oppo BDP-83SE to his MCD500 and while he felt the MCD 500 was ultimately superior, he did rate the Oppo machine very highly indeed.

Has anyone had an opportunity to compare the new BDP-95 to the earlier Oppo machines, or to McIntosh or other top quality BluRay, CD, or SACD players.

I am particularly interested in the audio quality of the BDP-95 Oppo machine, and would really like to know how it would compare to some of the better players.

Dan, I haven't had a chance to compare a BDP-95 yet, but I have a BD-83SE and I am very impressed with it. My guess is a 95 is sonically superior to the 83SE due to the higher spec DACs, the improved power supply and transformer, but how much, I can't say w/o being able to A/B them in my system. Oppo does have an excellent rep for making substantive changes in their products, so my guess is it would better. One guess being that it be notably quieter, having seen data on the S/N performance....one site said the noise floor was at the residual of their very expensive test equipment.

Mine does quadruple duty, playing Redbook CDs, SACDs, and for video, it's Blu-ray performance is nothing short of spectacular. It also does a beautiful job of up sampling DVD to 1080p video. Put a good power cord on these for even better performance.

An off the charts value in my book.

Julian.......There is a lot to like about the new Oppo BDP-95. As good as the BDP-83SE is, the BDP-95 has raised the bar. First and foremost is the amazing ESS 32Bit Sabre Reference dual quad DACs. These are the same DACs McIntosh uses in the new MCD1100, and the resolution and detail is off the chart. The two channel balanced outputs for dedicated stereo are a real plus. Of course the BDP-95 plays DVD, audio CD, HDCD, Kodak Picture CD, AVCHD, MP4, DivX, MKV, FLAC, WAV and other audio/video/picture files on recorded discs, USB and external eSATA drives.

The high definition video from the Anchor Bay video processor in the BDP-83 is so clean it has to be seen to be believed, yet the reviews of the new Marvell Kyoto-G2 Qdeo video processor in the BDP-95 are saying it beats out the Anchor Bay chip, plus the Qdeo chip supports the new Blu-ray 3D specifications should you ever decide to give that option a try. In addition, the BDP-95 has two HDMI outputs which offer the option of full audio and video output to two displays; or dedicate one HDMI for audio, the other for video, allowing high quality video and audio for both signal paths. And lets not overlook connectivity. Using the included wireless-N adapter or the built-in RJ45 Ethernet port allows you to stream Netflix and other sources on demand.

There's more, but you get the picture. The new Oppo BDP-95 offers tremendous performance, both audio and video, with a feature set that is unbeatable at the incredibly low price of $999.99. In my opinion, it is the Universal player that sets the goals for every other manufacturer.

Julian.......My pleasure. I have both the Oppo BDP-83 in the living room, and the BDP-83SE in my studio home theater system downstairs. They are fine performers, so much so it is hard for me to justify buying the new BDP-95. Otherwise I would order at least one.

If you decide to put the BDP-95 in your home, don't forget how much we like reviews.

Dan, why not selling one of your Oppo players, say the non-SE version, and get the BDP-95? It may be a small investment but a serious gain in performance. Then deciding where to place would be the icing in the cake. Just thinking out loud.

Sal.......The biggest reason I am staying with my two Oppo players is I have no interest in streaming video or 3D. The BDP83SE is in the home theater surround sound system, connected analog to my MX120, and HDMI to my Sony XBR wide screen, and delivers all the high-end sound and quality HD picture I desire. The BDP-83 is in my two channel system upstairs doing the same thing but in stereo only through my main sound system. I am a happy camper.

All the movies I watch are on DVD and Blu-ray discs in my library (600+ discs), plus I rent Blu-ray movies from Netflix delivered right to my door. Until streaming can deliver full resolution HD and surround, spinning movies on disc is the only way I'll go.
