P5 / P10 questions
For Tim aka Mtroo
I don't know if this is the right place to pose the questions I have, so maybe they could be moved to the appropriate spot. Do these units provide surge protection? Is there a distinct advantage to a regeneration device compared to a power conditioner? I have read here and elsewhere that for "dirty power", the regenerators work better. How do I know if my power is dirty? It almost seems there may be a component of trial and error. Try a regenerator, see if it improves things. Thanks. _________________

Yes, they do provide surge protection. I am also a fan of regeneration, as I think the concept behind it is valid. Although a bit biased, of course, I would recommend reading the information on PS Audio's website about the P10. It does give some information about the process and difference from conditioners. I originally bought mine as a result of a lightning strike that was a near miss to my system (caused the red lights on my beloved 2301s to blink, but all was well). I heard about, but was dubious regarding, sound quality improvements resulting from power regeneration. Then I installed it and it was nearly a component level upgrade to the SQ. In addition to the comfort of knowing that I was protected (as protected as one can be, which is not completely) from an electrical surge, I got a great jump in sound. Then, I discovered that my beloved 2301s sucked energy like there was no tomorrow and ended up buying a second P10, which also improved my sound.
The lightning strike caused me to do some electrical work at the house (improving my grounds, improving the way some of the wiring was done) and motivated me to install a whole house surge protector, but I rest much better knowing that the P10s are between the outlet on the wall and the system. This may be misplaced comfort, but there it is. Plus, it really sounds better (lots). YMMV. Weirdcuba

Question:
Is the P5/P10 as good a surge protector as, say, a RGPC product? Would it be worthwhile to run your newly acquired P5/P10 through a RGPC600 or 1200C?

PSAudio advises not to do so in their documentation if I recall correctly. I'm not sure why that is, and whether an RGPC product or equivalent would add protection overall, but I recall that PSAudio advises to just plug their units into the wall. It makes sense that it would add another layer of protection, but it also sort of makes sense to me as a lay person in the area, that it could impact the SQ. We are now into electrical concepts that are way beyond me . . .

Tim.......You should consider whole house surge protection at your electrical service panel. Clamp spikes there and protect all of your home's electronics.

Thanks everyone for the excellent advice. I spoke at length with Ivan and with my new Mc1.2kw coming, I will need to run a couple of dedicated lines. I will speak with my electrician regarding a whole home surge protector. Additionally, I did read about the P10 on the website. I plan on obtaining 3 P5's for my system. One for each 1.2kw and the other for K03x and Silenzio.
How does one surge protect vis a vis the Ethernet? The P5 has an Ethernet input but is that for protection or to transmit statistics regarding the unit Thanks.
