Supporting the HVAC system was not important under those circumstances. After this latest event I am considering increasing the generator size from 8KW to 15KW. That will also require installing a larger transfer switch. That additional power will then support my HVAC system along with what is presently supported by the generator. Heat in the winter during a power loss has now become an issue.

Dan - increasing your genset size would be the gold standard for energy security in your home. I guess you have to weigh that cost against a once in 20 year probability of occurrence. The weather seems to be getting more unpredictable though.

This winter in Wisconsin we had a couple of mornings with a 93 degree F difference between the outside air temp and inside air temp, which got me thinking about the capacity of my backup heating systems

Wow !! 74, that's what my 87 year old mother keeps her thermostat set at in her assisted living complex. I guess it's fair to say Dan you would have difficulty surviving back north again.

Over a foot of snow/ice, lots of wind and 15F at home right now.
On the other hand, we are off on a boat ride to see the manatees on the edge of the Everglades in a couple of hours.
Stay safe and warm everyone.

Dave.......You're right, it would be difficult for me to have to tolerate winter temperatures in the north. We are acclimated to a warmer climate where we rarely see temps below freezing, and when we do it doesn't stay there for long. A week of low 20's at night and mid 30's during the day is unusual for us.

Yep, my buddy who lives in 'the Villages' says the same thing every time he comes home for Christmas, totally acclimated to the Florida climate.
