Dave, I heard the dac last week. It was in a system of a mac air, Shindo Aurieges-L preamp, Sanders Magtech amp into Magnepan 20.7's. If I had other Line Magnetic gear I would be very pleased to have it in my system as it is a good dac just on the warmer side that delivers detail & musicality.

Haven't heard it yet but I would imagine it would go well with your LM518. Retail looks to be $1800.00 so it's very reasonable to boot.

It does look good - would be interested to hear more impressions. Pricing direct from China is about $850 - tempted at that price and could be a good base for some upgrades.

It sounds waaay better than any $850 dac I've heard... If you can get one for that it is pretty amazing value. It's very pretty in real life and looks and sounded good for a $2k dac. I'm heading back to the same place where I heard it when it had just landed and I think they have already rolled the tubes with some Nos valves but will check for sure... Either way at $850 with the opportunity to play at upspecing it sounds like a lot of fun Omodo.

Kev & Graham,

How does the 502CA compare to the other tube DACs you've heard?

For the price the dac is really quite good value. I have lived with this dac for 6 weeks & as you have the option of bypassing the tube output to have a direct sound it has the benefit of adding to the + side of things. I have the Lampizator dac, Level 4 Generation 4 & the Line Magnetic is not in the same class but then again we are talking $5k more for the Lampi, so no surprise there. If you want a dac that is quite affordable & will do, the LM is definitely a starter, if you want the last thing in resolution & detail that is also not fatiguing after a heavy listening session, you will need to spend a lot more than this price point. For mine, I'd tune it with footers weights & cables & still come in under the price of the uber dacs.

Thanks Kev!
Are resolution & detail the main ways in which the Lampizator is better?
Or would you say the Lampi sounds less "digital" too?

I'd say the Lampi is voiced with a richer/warmer midrange, but that could be something as easy as tubes. As we all know, the price point of accurate midrange bloom with detail
can be expensive.

I'm hoping there will be further comments on this topic.

Power amplifiers: Audio Electronic Supply (AES) SE-1 300B SET, Quad 909
Speakers: Quad ESL 2805, JBL 4430 studio monitors (93 dB efficient, so they work well with the 300B amp)
Power: Goal Zero Yeti 1250 lead-acid battery generator, Core Power power cords into the amps, otherwise all stock power cables (Note: the Yeti has been a significant system upgrade)

What's next: maybe some new production 6SN7 tubes or some quasi-mesh TJ Full Music 300Bs in the SE-1.
