I got to meet Dr. Gow on several occasions and we became friends. He used to visit Nicholson's Stereo in Nashville regularly and since I was a regular visitor, I made it a point to be there when he came by. I think he knew "Mr. Nick" fairly well. He was absolute class in every respect and very humble. He put you at ease and although the president of McIntosh, never called attention to that fact. At Nicholson's he was mainly into demonstrating his four piece speakers, the XRT22's which I listened to on several occasions. Also, the MCD7000 which I remember him saying "saved his company". I owned one. It was one of the first CD players that had a natural relaxed sound, even though it employed only one D/A converter. I believe the MCD7005 was the first to employ dual D/A converters (one per channel). I owned one of those also. I believe that if substituted into my current system I could hear a significant difference from what I have now. I hope that I could but I wouldn't bet my house on it. One of the reasons I like Mac digital front ends is that they have been making them for a very long time and they began with truly superb CD players. I don't know why the MCD7000 sounded so good but I was not the only one back then who thought so. Dr. Gow certainly did and so did everyone at Nicholson's.
