JBL 6328 question

I'm looking for help from anyone in this forum on helping me with some choices on AV equipment for a new HT set up. I'm starting with speakers. And the basic question I am bumping up against is whether to go active or passive. Specifically I have an opportunity to pick up some JBL 6328p with 6312 sub.. This would be a 5.1 config but I could probably get another set of 6328 to get to 7.1. I think these are near-field monitors but could be used mid-field. Also, would I still be able to use the RMC feature of these monitors if the XLR for the LCR did not get directly connected to the 6312 ?

I have my home theater set up with a combination of JBL LSR6332 passive 3-way monitors on the left and right fronts driven by a McIntosh MC352 amplifier, a JBL LSR6312SP powered subwoofer, two JBL LSR6328P active bi-amped speakers for the center, and two JBL LSR6328P active bi-amped speakers for the left and right rear channels. My processor is the McIntosh MX120. My room size is 12' x 15'. This setup is spectacular, dynamic, and detailed. Both movies and music sound fantastic on this system.

Even if you decide to go with the JBL LSR6328's as front left and rights, you will still be getting a very fine 5.1 system. The photo of the front of the theater shows two separate sound systems. The rack on the left is for the two channel tube system, and the SF Auditors have been replaced with SF Guarneri Mementos. The two channel system is completely separate from the home theater system. The HT system is the rack on the right. The turntable is now in my main system upstairs.

Thanks for sharing photos and description. Beautiful set-up btw. It looks like you have this set-up as your recording studio. Are you familiar with RMC of the JBL 6328/6312 ? Also, can you drive the active speakers directly from the preamp without using an amplifier ?

LivingHD.......Yes, I am familiar with JBL's Room Mode Correction (RMC) and have setup the subwoofer using the JBL RMC kit. On the four JBL LSR6328P speakers I am using the dip switch adjustments on the rear mounted amps to make minor adjustments.

With any active speaker, including the JBL LSR6328P's, all that is needed is a line level balanced or unbalanced signal from a preamp or processor. I feed all four 6328P's directly from the MX120 processor, as well as the 6312SP active subwoofer. Several AA members have auditioned my home theater, listening to surround sound recordings and watching movies. Everyone who has experienced the system has been thoroughly impressed with its performance. The HT system with McIntosh and JBL rocks the theater.

Yes, my HT room also doubles as a recording studio, with the control room in the next room. With a couple of cable swaps at a Speakon patch bay I can send anything recorded back to the studio through the JBL 6332's and the 6312SP powered sub for monitoring in the studio. There are five separate headphone channels in the studio from the control room, and talk-back to the headphones or monitors. It is a great set up. I also use a pair of JBL LSR6328P active bi-amped speakers at the control room work station. They are very good monitors, both near field and mid field.

That's a great set up Dan. I bet those JBL sounds awesome. I have my eyes on a pair of LSR6332.

Mike.......Thanks. The JBL LSR6332 speakers are excellent. McIntosh and JBL have great synergy, and these speakers can move some air.
