"However, the differences weren't blatant; I couldn't hear them without paying close attention."

That pretty much can be said of any component upgrade in high end audio. Once you get beyond a certain point in quality the differences become very subtle and nuanced. If "blatant" improvement was the upgrade threshold in our hobby very few would ever change anything in their system.

This might be slightly off topic but it seems to me that the real innovation in digital playback recently has been Roon. Not just the experience with all of its metadata, which is wonderful, and the perfect integration of Tidal. The room correction features that have been recently added are quite sophisticated and provide a far bigger improvement in sound quality (used properly) than a new digital codec. That being said I hope that hi res streaming continues to grow regardless of what format that it is sent in.
