Be very careful connecting to the variable outputs. Make sure the volume is way down. You would not be the first to have soiled underwear connecting to the wrong outputs or forgetting to check the volume control on the front panel.

I will never forget that experience, either. Thank goodness for McIntosh Power guard. I almost crooked on the spot.

Thanks again,
I connected the variable output (XLR) to my C500 and it appears to work but you have to turn it up pretty high. What is the % it must be set at to match the fixed output?

From the Owner's Manual:

Volume Level from 0 - 100%.
Note: When the Volume Level is 81%, the Rear Panel Variable Outputs will be at the same volume level as the Fixed Outputs.

Epiphany time! When the variable output is set at 80% I get full volume from the headphone jack. What was misleading me was that my preamp plays loud at 40%. Thanks Ron and Dan for pointing out the 80-81% unity gain thing. All is well in MAC land once again.
