I agree with several posters that you really shouldn't get worked up about where individual components come from. I guarantee that something made in China is present in most hi fi components including Mac.

QC is the most important and many products that have moved production to China have improved in quality significantly. Anyone driven a BMW 7series or Merc S class made in China? You can't tell any difference with those made in Germany.

The romantic ideal of wanting products 100% made and sourced with local ingredients is merely wishful thinking.

BTW the 2301s seem to be built as bomb proof as any other mc component I have seen.

I am surprised if "McIntosh makes their own boards in-house."

I work for a small electronics manufacturing company. We found it was not economical to make the actual boards. We purchase our boards from several North American companies that specialize in the board manufacturing.

We do all the assembly in house, including putting all the electronic parts on the boards with selective soldering machines, two Philips Topaz SMT placement machines, and some hand assembly. We have found keeping things in-house ensures our product quality.

The McIntosh assembly staff seems very loyal. Has McIntosh been replacing staff as they retire with younger assembly staff?

I hope McIntosh is not outsourcing to China. It is hard to ensure quality when you are trying to find the cheapest bid.

Processors in the US >1year old probably came from the Malay plant, though, before they shut down the assembly.

One of the McIntosh plant tour threads has more detail. They do their own sheet-metal work, as well. Glass front panels. Transformer winding. That is one reason I'm moving to all McIntosh at some point. Trying to do my bit for keeping real jobs in the U.S. I will not shop at Wal-Mart. I consider them unAmerican.

Where do you shop that you think they do not have foreign manufactured goods? Target? Macy's? Nordstrom? Safeway? Home Depot?

And lets not put any money into the pockets of any of those un-American types who work in the stores, headquarters, distributors, truckers, importers etc. Those are not real jobs?

In general, manufacturing always has and always will be sourced where the costs of production are the cheapest. After WW2, the US had basically the only manufacturing that had not been bombed into the ground. As time went on and countries rebuilt, manufacturing moved. It has moved around the globe, following the cheapest labor. Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China, Indonesia, India etc. This will never change. If you want manufacturing to return to the US, eliminate the minimum wage and allow US manufacturers to compete.

The US will only have the manufacturing that can be done here priced competitively with the rest of the world. Anything else will eventually move.

I don't have a problem if McIntosh were to go to China, but not at the current retail prices. Sending it to China would make it more affordable and that's a good thing. Imagine, MX150 at $4999 retail or Mc275MK-V at $2499.

I love my Apple iPad, iPhone, iPod, Mac Mini, MacBook Pro, Canon T2i SLR camera, & Sony HDTV. All made in China.

I will not shop at Wal-Mart. I consider them unAmerican.

I think the statement above is more unAmerican than Walmart. Our country is a great nation because of our open mind attitude, we embrace great ideas, people, food, cultures, technologies, etc., from all over the world. Look at what happens to countries that are closed to outside world.

Can you imagine if every citizen in every country thinks or behaves that way (not patronizing a store because it carries mostly foreign goods? I wear Swiss watches, drive German cars, own McIntosh, use iphone, etc., they are not made in this country.

I am assuming that YB-2 boycotted Walmart because it carries lots of merchandise from China (the original heading is about parts made in China), though I am not sure if the statement above is limited to goods from China - if it is limited to China then the statement above is perhaps not worth responding to as YB-2 clearly demonstrated his prejucdice against one nation or race. Why not stop patronizing MBZ dealers as they only carry automobiles from Germany, stop buying Patek Phillips or Rolex watches because they are made in Switzerland?

Or perhaps he also thinks they are unAmerican due to how they treat their workers and manufacturers? Just saying, considering how many people on a certain side of the spectrum use the unAmerican/unPatriotic verbiage, it's lost a lot of its impact.

I will not enter a Wal-Mart store even if you had a gun to my head, but not because I believe they are unAmerican...
