I see you have a three head deck with a Source/monitor switch. You may have to go from Source to Monitor when you are playing back, my technics is like that. Give it a try...

Hi everyone, thank you for this forum.
I just bought an AKAI GX 4000D from a guy (50 euros, about 60 dollars). When I bought it, I had brought with me an mp3 player, just to perform basic record tests. Both left and right MIC channels seemed to work fine =>meaning the delete head had deleted the old song on the tape and the record head had "magnetized" the mp3 I was playing. I took it home and made the same test again, which worked. I wanted to try the "line in" input with RCA cables to see if it worked also. It didn't And since that moment (I think) the tape recorder doesn't work anymore. I spent 2 days trying everything and I'm getting nothing. I was wondering if maybe you had an idea ? Here's what I can tell: - I can here the MIC source and line in source (VU needle is moving just fine) - The playback head seems to work fine also (i can hear the sounds that are already on the tapes, which are terrible by the way ://) - I tryed every modes possible (with SOS, without, 1-4 tracks, stereo tracks, 3-4 tracks, line and even line out...) - I also tyed with another tape (also an old tape), nothing - if I try to record (I also pressed the "REC" security and the red REC light is on) and if I set the input MIC volume real hight, I hear some distorted version of what I send, but it sounds really bad, like a distortion guitar pedal that runs out of battery. - After I noticed that the recorder wasn't working anymore, I cleaned the heads with alchool (they were a bit dirty), but it didn't change anything. Question/Hypothesis: - When I installed the tape recorder, I placed it next to my studio monitor... Could the magnet in the monitor have affected the erase tape head and the record tape head, and not the playback tape head ? - Do you know if a magnetized tape heads can just stop working like that ? I thought magnetized tape heads were just a bit less efficiant, not out of order. - do you think testing on a new tape, could be worth it ? Thanks you very much for you time. |
