The 458 Speciale seemed like not the greatest idea since I knew Ferrari would do something even better for 488 so I turned down my spot when it came time to order. Once again the dealer was ecstatic. Then the game got old...
That's not new. Getting a spot for any limited edition has always been a game it's true for the Speciale and will be true for the Pista.

The more limited the edition is, the harder it is to get an allocation. For the F12 TdF, the unspoken rule was to own a V12 models (owning all of them is a plus). For the LaFerrari, it is even more restricted.

They know it makes absolute financial sense as demand far outweight supply so they only reward their biggest clients.

BTW the rule for the pista was leaked some time ago. Owning a 488 is not enough.

I am well aware of the game. Just wasn't sure what it took to get a Pista but the Speciale was easy enough to get. I had one on order but never took delivery. Of course by that time I was already on my 5th Ferrari from the same dealer. (360 spider/430/430 Scud/458/360 Challenge Stradale)

Around that same time, when I first heard the news of the Porsche GT3RS 4.0L, I had enough of Porsche "connection" having bought at least 6 cars from the dealer that I was able to line up not one but two 4.0L which are now worth way north of $500k.

Since my garage was full of toys as it was, I decided not to actually purchase the 4.0L GT3RS since I had no room to store them. That was the biggest mistake ever.

I'm not into cars that much anymore but the craziness is only growing among the car people so I'll watch from the sidelines and hopefully do well with the less active approach of watching the stocks grow (or burst depending on the market conditions).

Having a Scud and a Stradale in your past certainly played a massive role into getting an allocation and I wouldn't call that easy enough to get. With such a history, you would be able to qualify for a Pista without owning a 488.

And I agree with you, the market has gone mad and it doesn't make much sense. We're never too far away from a correction that would make the price come back to earth.

I always wondered why Ferrari doesn't sell them via some auction mechanism (especially for the LaFerrari or F12tdf equivalents) and capture some of that premium for their shareholders.

Rumor had it that the bigwigs at Ferrari considered a minimum of 5 Ferraris to even get you on the "potential" list of LaFerrari clients. That of course is thousands and thousands of people! There were only 499 LaFerrari made. A friend of mine has 15 Ferraris and most of them are of the limited edition/rare models... Did he get a LaFerrari? NOPE. Sammy Hagar did though Ferrari chooses clients for those cars that can bring even more publicity. Simple as that.

Of course both Ferrari and Porsche get their panties in a bunch when some of these clients flip them for a profit. The ink had not even dried on the checks yet and I already saw a LaFerrari in person in Naples FL for $5M asking price....

In retrospect, it was the 360 Challenge Stradale that made me realize that cars from Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, McLaren, etc will simply never be this good again. No matter how much horsepower more they give us, they all have lost SOUL.

Out of all the cars that I have owned, the 360 Challenge Stradale will always be the ONE car that stands out the most. It was a car that made my palms sweaty, set my heart racing and put a permanent grin on my face while driving. The intoxicating symphony right behind the driver of the sweetest, naturally aspirated V8 can never be bettered by the modern turbos and electric boost gadgets. That car was the pinnacle of my car ownership.

360 Challenge Stradale Fifth Gear Test. I must have had "petrol" coursing through my veins! https://youtu.be/t2DX3WDrDFk

There is a massive cult being created around the Stradale and it could be one of the most appreciating model in the future. It was a race car made road legal whereas the rest whereas the Scud and the Speciale are road car made for the track.

Plus it is rarer than a F40

Correct. I owned it before the more recent doubling from $135k to $300k and it will go higher. My buddy tracked down the most pristine F40 he could find and paid $375k for it which I thought was very steep at that time. Well, he wasn’t wrong, it’s worth over a million now.

Difficult to keep track of the Ferrari 250 GTO market value as they often trade hands in private deals. There was one that recently went for $80 Million.

Watching a $50-80M car hit a wall is painful. Perhaps not so painful to the guy who drives such a car on a track... After all, it is really the chassis with the serial number that matters most and everything else is just a matter of more $$$ to fix. https://youtu.be/p--8DXM123E
