Default NYC dining and theatre recomendations

My wife and I will be visiting NYC this fall with another couple for a weekend getaway. What dining spots do y'all suggest? Our friends are leaning toward Italian and/or American so my wife and I would like to oblige them... Price is essentially unlimited if the place is that good!

What theatre shows do y'all suggest? We're up for anything.

Thanks in advance!

Mitch

Too many places to recommend...

What hotel are you at? There's usually a few things right around the corner.

Angelo's in Little Italy would be a place to visit for lunch....best calamari and marinara. It may sound touristy but Peter Luger's won't dissapoint.

From everything I have heard, try and get theater tickets for War Horse. When we were in London that is the play everyone was talking about and it is now in New York.

Carmine's for Italian and John's Pizzeria

Carmine's | NYC's Legendary Family Style Italian Restaurant | Locations | Theater District, New York | About

John's Pizzeria

These two restaurants are about a half a block apart. Our last visit to NYC we ate here two times, at both places. Had our 'nice' dress-up dinner at Bobby Flay's BarAmericain - was disappointed.

Mitch
Thanks for the reminder of a Theater trip to NY. I decided to purchase tickets for War Horse in October. Now all I have to do is find another play and book some flights and a hotel.

I agree about John's Pizza, however I would go to the original location on Bleecker Street. In my opinion you want to spend as little time as possible in Times Square.

Suprisingly, I was very disappointed with Peter luger's last October when I was there. May be I psyched myself up too much but I could have cooked better at home

For really good Italian, I would go to any of Mario Batali's resaturants. They are phenomenal:

Babbo - in West Village is more upscale and pricey and you will need to book well in advance (months +) but you can always give a try (Babbo Restaurant)
Lupa - in SoHo is more casual and really simple dishes (minimilast pasta dishes) but the quality of the ingredients is so good (Welcome to LUPA OSTERIA ROMANA). You should still try booking well in advance here too.
Del Posto - I have not been but supposed to be excellent. (Del Posto - Home Page). Reservations also 1 month + in advance.

Lupa will be your best bet to get in but call from now

We are staying at the Plaza Hotel at Christmas.

We always eat at Peter Luger Steakhouse in Brooklyn.
They don't take credit cards and you need to find out their strict reservation rules, as they fill up quick. Unlike like howie, "I think it's the best." or equal to the best.
