This leads one to the question- what would you like to experience in a restaurant setting? You may like some nice background music, but not too loud, and you definitely want to have a "space" around you of privacy while you eat with others.
What else would you like?
A little, gentle, background music would be fine. It depends on the restaurant. But it should literally fade into the background and not intrude in conversations.

I worry more about the quality of the food and service than the noise level.

Seldom do I ever see noisy people in a nice restaurant, it is usually the chain types (Chili's etc ) where you are in and out that get noisy.

As much as I used to love to go out to dinner, lately I'd much rather have dinner at home surrounded by those who's company I enjoy. Some wine, some nice background music, good food, it doesn't get better than that.

You guys complain about loud restaurants? Try going to a Russian restaurant where it is customary to come in around 9pm, eat, drink vodka, dance to the live music that is blasting about 110dB till 4 or 5 am!!! Talk about being hung over and having a headache the next morning!

Umm, this was a Halloween Party in one of the restaurants we used to frequent.
