IMO, iTunes Match is crap. I use AudioTap to stream my entire music library to my iPhone. Works GREAT.

iTunes Match downloads a low bitrate version of your music file to your iDevice, not streaming so you will need storage. AudioTap streams your music library to your iDevice from you home Mac so no downloading. If you are in WiFi, AudioTap streams at full resolution AIFF or WAV if your library is in that uncompressed format. Most audiophile music servers are in one of those formats for better sound. AudioTap is $1.99 fixed one time purchase.
Don't get me started with the problems with iTunes Match. IMO, it's a failed product for $25 a year.

Mike, it looks like you need something on the home Mac as well, mediatap. Sounds like you are familiar with it all, so hope you don't mind a couple of questions:
Can mediatap on one machine find music on other macs in the house? On a NAS device (I'd assume so)? Or is mediatap needed on each mac? It looks like mediatap needs to be running on the home mac whenever you want to use audiotap...so either have it run at boot time or remember to run it before you leave (I am thinking of the travel scenario here) I am ripping to a NAS and moving other files off the MBP's drive. So when I am traveling there's a very good chance I won't have a Mac at home, it will be with me, so mediatap/audiotap won't help there, and perhaps iTunes Match (or the Amazon service?) could be better - albeit, as you say, at a lower quality. But if someone has a dedicated Mac at home, a Mac Mini as a music server, then this might be the better solution. Not sure what the implications are network wise. Mike iTunes match does let you stream to your iPhone that is how I'm listening in the car.

David, yes but if I understand the Apple site, after streaming the song remains on the iPhone or iPad. That could be advantageous if you want to listen and don't have a network connection. I assume you can delete the songs from the idevice and not affect the match/cloud?

The problem with iTunes Match is you can't sync with your library anymore. So you can't have music on the device and also download what you want. You have to start clean and use Match 100%. If you don't have Internet and you didn't download your music prior to losing connection, you have no music on your iDevice.

I even buy songs on the iOS device & they are added to my Mac back home. Of course you can turn off iTunes Match and sync as usual. The only Audiophile reason is to sync Apple Lossless or AIFF formatted music. Apple even updated iTunes Match to include the 'Genius' capability. This gets around the the limited storage of the iOS hard drive. Now, Apple has released the documentation for recording studios to publish 24bit/96KHz audiofiles in a strategic move to offer high resolution music from their online store. In a year, I think iTunes Match will play high resolution audio 24bit/96KHZ over 4GLTE on your iPhone 5 and iPad 4. |
