Looking for some guidance on a set up (rig)
I currently have a Pioneer Elite SC-65 which is about a year old, I am now starting to delve into Hi res files DSD and 32 bit FLAC files.. With that being said the SC-65 can't handle DSD files or anything over 24 bit...
I would need to sale my SC-65 and get something else.. My question is what would be the best route on a limited budget? Note my set up in my signature line, mainly the Sonus Faber Concerto speakers and Oppo BDP-105 for DSD source. Am I now at a point that I should be looking at discrete components? Or should I stay with an all in one unit like the SC-65? Limited budget to the tune of $4 or $5K....Could a good system be bought buying used/demo gear or should I buy exclusively new gear??

What I would do is purchase a PCM/DSD capable DAC, eliminate using the SC-65 internal DAC, and connect it like this:
Music Source == (USB) ==> DAC == (Analog RCA or XLR)==> SC-65 This way you won't have to replace the SC-65 and you can enjoy the higher resolution FLAC and DSD files. There are a LOT of good DACs out on the market and there is no shame in purchasing used. Just make sure it has the specifications to process the file types you will be using.

Yamaki has a good plan although the dac in the OPPO is an exceptional value IMO. I use the SC-68 with the Oppo 95 for my video system. Another thought would be to keep the SC-65 for your nice theater set up and use it as a preamp for two channel. Then grab a nice Tube amp for two channel (unless you prefer your music in multichannel). Just another option. Good luck.

Seems like you own an oppo 105 and that handles DSD files up to dsd64 and all other hi def file formats. Use the analog outs on the oppo to feed to the receiver. You already have a kick ass DAC in the oppo.

And what is a 32 bit flac file? I don't think that exists. |

Agreed but from what I've read I can't stream DSD files to the 105...It requires a USB drive to the 105...Or a disc...

You can stream DSD to the 105 through the USB input (not a drive)

I push DSD64 files via network to my 105 via JRiver. The new 105D I'm told will handle up to DSD128 via network.

If you are having problems, maybe try updating the Oppo firmware? |
