Best advice Serge, and most inexpensive and effective tweak you can make.

I have A/B'd every cable in my set-up to see which I preferred. I did draw a arbitrary line in the sand as far as cost goes and that could change over time.

If cables is something you plan on upgrading in the future, it may be wise to choose a manufacturer that offers a trade-up program that allows you to move up the line. I have no history selling equipment and imagine it would be difficult to earn anyones trust without any sales. Last time i upgraded, I believe I got 70% of retail toward the new cables. Could I get more from Agon...maybe but its easy to order new ones and give the old ones to my dealer in the same day.

I can usually get 55-60% of retail toward new cables, but the problem is that the higher up you go, the more expensive they are... I think I will stop for awhile. Famous last words!

I use what a lot of other audio professionals use and I learned from some highly respected engineers. Think about it. If the guy doing the recording, mixing, mastering etc is using Mogami 2549 from the mic to the console, do you need something more expensive? And, Mogami 2549 works for both balanced and unbalanced interconnects. Belden and Canare are both very good speaker cables and again, used by many audio professionals in studios and on stages. BJC does a great job making cables. Redco is another source for all types of interconnect or speaker cables, custom made to your specifications (exact lengths, choice of connectors etc). You can buy good heavy gauge IEC power cables from any number of sources. Making them look fancy with with exotic plugs and Techflex braided sleeving does not justify the exorbitant prices some manufacturers charge. Audiophile grade power cables? Don't forget what's in your walls coming from your breaker box. You're going to pay big bucks to go a few feet from the wall outlet to your equipment? Use your ears but don't forget to use your head and don't get fooled thinking more expensive sounds better. Last edited by Rex Anderson; 03-09-2018 at 10:42 AM. |

I follow a similar philosophy, if it provides good EMI/RFI shielding, low capacitance, with the proper gauge for the length of run, that's all I look for. The proper specs for the proper application. I am really enjoying my BJC 10AWG speaker wires. Really makes my Mini-Ts sing!

+1 I look for well-built, good quality cables (BJC) that do not cost a fortune. The money that I save can be better spent on equipment/room improvements. |

I like Redco because they have many brands of cable that BJC does not offer and they do more pro audio stuff (balanced XLR).
By the way, Gotham Audio Cable is some fine stuff. |

Whatever I can find in a Thrift Store, that is better than the mass market included variety of cables.
