Default MC2311 Amplifier

Ok, now that I got your attention, do you think a replacement 2301 is coming? Do you think it could be called the 2311? Maybe there won’t be a replacement.

Either way what do you think a new model may have? Look like? Specs?

For me, the #1 want is the large front face, 1/2” glass and large handles.

I could see the updated glass topped extruded transformer enclosures that are becoming the standard that I also enjoy, not sold on the shape of the MC901 top cover however. I actually like the black anodized bead blasted aluminum on the MC2152. I would enjoy more of that look and less chrome. I could see the updated cage use of carbon fiber. I could do without the “ashtray” on top..

A larger meter would be nice, I understand there is only so much real estate on the front panel for a meter, windows and handles.. Would I give up windows to have a 1.25 style meter?? Possibly..

Updated Solid Cinch binding posts and the 1.25KW feet. I wish locking XLR jacks would stay as McIntosh seems to be moving away from them.. The updated RCA jack would be nice too.

I would think new Power Guard Screen Grid Sensor would be used. Eight KT88, four 12AT7 and two 12AX7A seems to be the direction?

I noticed the input impedance if the 611, 901 SS & Tube section are all 22,000 ohm. The 2301 is 47,000 ohm. Maybe an updated amp would also be 22,000 allowing those who wish to Bi-Amp with 611 separates to do so more easily?

This is all me thinking out loud. Love it or hate it.

I think whatever changes are in the tube section of the 901 will show up in a new model 2301 in the next few months

It’s been 12 years since McIntosh introduced the MC 2301. That’s a long run and testament to the design.

I have had MC 2301’s in my system for awhile - my amps have serial numbers in the sixties.

The MC 2301 was McIntosh’s first quad balanced tube amp. In my opinion it was the last truly revolutionary power amp product Mcintosh introduced - everything since has been a derivative of something else. The 901 is a good example of that.

The MC 2301 was designed by Ron Evans, who has since retired. Maybe they’ll bring him back for an encore!

For tube purists the 2301 is a bit of an enigma as it has a solid state front end. They might go down an all tube road.

As far as what I’d want in an updated MC 2301 - better sonics, better dynamics - super low noise just more of what this amp does so well.

I emailed McIntosh this exact question and they said there are no current plans for a new 2301 replacement.

Well, you never know... I asked audio research about their plans to replace the ref5se a few years ago and they said there were no plans.

A week later, the ref6 dropped [emoji12]

I'd also like to see a MC2KW update. Long overdue.

I waited a couple of years for the MC2301 replacement. I finally gave up and purchased a pair. I am happy that I did since I like them so much. There may be a replacement in the future but that doesn't defer the fact that I like them "as is". Will I like the new model in the future? I have no idea if it will be better or worse to my ears than the current model.
