Last night Linda and I went Downtown to see what was easily the most energetic evening of music we have seen is some time. There are bands that are meant to be seen Live (The Stones, Springsteen for example) and now we can add Old Crow Medicine Show to that list. We attend quite a few live shows and I don't remember any group who plays with more energy than these guys. While Americana is not for everyone and I seldom if ever play this music at home, one cannot attend a concert like this and not appreciate the talent on stage. Several songs were played and sung at lightning speed. I swear they alternated drummers to give each a rest.
I have attached a review written by one of our very knowledgeable music critics. He nailed it. https://www.theoaklandpress.com/ente...f21242132.html Last edited by Still-One; 08-10-2019 at 01:29 PM. |

Yep. The last paragraph was right on.
a perfect cap on a night of celebrating what Secor called "good, bona fide, certified country music" -- and a band that plays it better than most, and maybe all, others. |

Friday, we went to Jazz Middelheim, celebrating its 50th birthday.
This is one of the cosiest larger jazz events in the world, according to many musicians. A 4 day happening. First concert was a Les McCann tribute by Eric Legnini. Joyful, but not the only reason why you would visit Jazz Middelheim. Second: the Kenny Werner Quartet. Kenny played so often with Toots Thielemans, longtime headliner and sort of godfather, and had 2 concerts this year (actually listening to his second right now live, a tribute to Toots). He played a brilliant set Friday, with an amazing Dave Liebman on flute, soprano and tenorsax, an inventive and attentive Peter Erskine on drums, and the very good Johannes Weidenmüller on bass. You could see from the smile on the faces of the musicians that they enjoyed themselves. Meta and I were touched: so many emotions, inventiveness and harmonious interplay. In my top 10 of jazz concerts of all times! He brought out a new LP, Church on Mars (not yet on CD or download). If the version of Embraceable You is as good as the live version they brought with Vivienne Aerts (Dutch singer, living in NY), I'm going to buy the CD or download! .

Third concert: Charles Lloyd.
Meta and I were disappointed. This was not the intelligent playing of the Charles Lloyd we know from his latest albums. His band was disconnected with him (and there was little connection between the band members either). He didn't even present his musicians... The whole thing felt commercial. It seemed to work with a lot of people though. He got a lot of applause, but not from ⅓ of the tent. We'll stick to his very good CDs we own.

Fourth concert: Enrico Brava '80th Birthday'.
A concert with a lot of variation in styles. Ultra modern to classic jazz standards. Rava still has it: power, creativity, and ideas. He could move me. His young band showed a lot of coherence. Recommended!
