I have the 948, and I really like it.
Before, my system usually sounded better in the night than in the day. Now it is more consistent. I also experience that all instruments sounds more in tune in some strange way. Hard to explain. Like every single instrument were slightly slightly out of tune before. |

I'll have to try it and see if I hear any benefit. Thanks for the input!

I took delivery of a Burmester 948 today and it's up and running. I will post impressions later when I get have spent some time with it and have had a chance for some proper AB testing. So far everything seems more articulated and natural sounding... kinda like those moments when your system just seems to sound it's best...
It's an older unit from 1996 however flawless cosmetically and after a call with Burmester it seems the only difference with the new units is that the power cord is permanently fixed to the back of the unit. In late 2011 it had a 600 euro maintanance job at Burmester so for 1100 eur shipped it was a no-brainer... So far so good.... and most importantly: no more hum in the 911! |

Great to hear about the hum being gone! Here in the USA, the new 948 has a removable power cord.

The first models of 948's had the fixed powercord (blue color) and the Burmester Logo punched on the front panel on the left side. In the past years, the 948's has the removable silver power cord 2.5 and the Burmester Logo punched on the front panel on the right side.

I first bought the 948's little brother-the 038 with 300 watts of DC offset compared to the 948's 500 watts and and two more plugs. The 038 made an immediate improvement in the sound of my system (911 monoblocks driving 802 B&Ws 350 Hz up and 2.5Kw "Roadie amps for 350 down. also 10 AR 1W 12" woofers for stero subs driven by two more Rodie amps). The difference was even easy to hear on my cable TV feed.
I then bought a 948 and replaced the 038-better-more of what the 038 did. Then I added the 038 to the other side of the AC line (I have two 10 gauge dedicated AC lines balanced across the neutral). Better again! Then I balanced the left right power amps across the "balanced" AC lines. The result was much more stereo separation and a bit more sound stage. All in all a dramatic improvement in all sound sources with no compromises in any other area. I have no other experience with AC conditioners. |
