Can you guys suggest some good educational material where I could learn how to invest in the stock market? I would like to but don't want to throw money away with our young family. I have literally zero knowledge so any information on where to learn is appreciated. I am also not referring to options where someone else manages your money. I would like to learn enough that I manage specific stocks myself through Scott trade or another similar site. I think it will be fun.
PM's are welcome if you don't feel comfortable sharing on the open forum. Also not looking for specifics about companies or anything like that, just resources for learning. Ivan let me know if you need to delete this thread for any reason I am ignorant of. Thanks Last edited by harri009; 05-05-2015 at 04:42 PM. |

I'd read this to start with. Although I haven't read it, the reviews are pretty good.
If you have kindle unlimited, it's free to read. If you don't, you can try kindle unlimited for 30 days for free. What a deal! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/111...A0963626GVQNGM |

Harri - there are million books and techniques out there, too many to wrap your head around. I can tell you that if you already know the basic principles , then I would look no further than Investors Business Daily by William 'oNeill. Go on their website and order his book.....How to make Money In Stocks. He has several titles depending on your knowledge level. Once you read his book and get an idea of what his philosophy is, you can sign up for a free trial to the website, print (daily newspaper), or both. I've been using IBD for almost 15 yrs. and if you follow his strategy to the T, it works like a charm. It's really incredible....there's no snake oil or voodoo, just a good sensible set of rules to follow based on historical models and charts.

Thanks, I am sure I will have many titles by the time I am ready to invest. I just got tired of trying to sort through the source material that was just advertisements or schemes vs the actual educational sources.

A Random Walk Down Wall Street: The Time-Tested Strategy for Successful Investing (Eleventh Edition) - Burton G. Malkiel.
There are a couple of approaches to investing in the stock market, including: 1) pick stocks based on your own research and analysis; 2) follow someone's strategy via a newsletter of some sort; 3) give your money to an asset manager or advisor who will invest on your behalf either for a fee calculated on the size of your portfolio or fee per trade; 4) use one of the more recent automated investment services (sometimes called robo-advisors) I've tried all of these and eventually settled on 4. I don't believe I have a specific edge whether it's time spent, access to information or feel for valuing stocks. With option 4 the approach is to use low fee index funds and to make sure over time, fees and taxes are as low as possible and that your portfolio is automatically rebalanced. Google Wealthfront or Betterment. I'm sure there are others by now. These automated services effectively automate the approach in the book listed at the top of this post. Another free opinion :-) |

One more book (highly recommended by Warren Buffet himself I might add):
