I had a TM-1 installed in my MX-119 and it was just awful in terms of selectivity and sound. I believe that this was the equivalent of the MR-85? I've never heard the MR-85 itself. The MR-88 is the best tuner I've ever owned (and that includes my Marantz 10B, Sequerra One, HK Citation IIIx, and Sony XDR-F1HD that I've done blind A/B tests against). Selectivity on adjacent stations (which is the ability to tune in a weak station when a strong station is on the next frequency up or down) is unmatched, and yet for strong stations, the vacuum tube-like sound for live music is incredible. No comparison to the TM-1.

I wouldn't say the TM-1 compares to the MR85 at all. I've tried both - my MX135 has the tuner module - and the MR85 SQ is head and shoulders above that module.

Ironically I find the TM-1 in my MX132 far better than the TM-2 in my old MA6600. I actually disliked the TM-2 so much that I purchased a few other vintage tuners to use instead. The TM-1 has great reception using a crappy pair of rabbit ears and actually sounds very nice to me.
Yamaki - I'm surprised your MR85 sounds so much better than the MX135 w/TM-1. My understanding is that the MR85 is just a fancy case for a TM-1 (or two). -Matt |
