Aerogel -- anyone using it
Aerogel's R values are 4 times higher per equal thickness than rock wool and this 78 year old light, silicon-based material is just now coming to the insulation and military armor R&D. AFAIK, there has been no R&D into its exact acoustic properties except that it can act as an absorber for mid and upper frequencies -- but, perhaps R&D actually is being done for audio acoustic panels.
Being thin and perhaps manufactured in a denser form, it might make an amazing absorber or diffuser and not stick out from the wall more than a half or one inch -- I am wondering if any acoustic materials company has started using or experimenting with this amazing substance.
