I carefully scraped off the offending ink, and then painted over with glossy black Rustoleum, several coats. Looks like new again. Can't upload pics, possibly cause I'm new here. Thanks Pete!
You bet and welcome to AA! Glad to hear you were able to repair the paint. Sometimes this can be done, and sometimes it cannot.

Wish I felt that brave with my MR77. I also need to replace the station indicator red light - it's dead but I fear I have to remove the pulley system and that scares me the most. that and cracking the faceplate, which I've done before.

Default Indicator Light

Below is a before photo; the original burnt red diffuser; a side-by-side comparison of the new LED and the original bulb; and finally an after photo showing the completed LED upgrade.

I wound up using a red drinking straw for the new diffuser and soldered in a 220 ohm current limiting resistor in series with the LED. The photo doesn't show it too well, but color and intensity isn't too bad, plus...this upgrade should last for another 30 years.

I have the rest of the LED upgrades and a roll of light-blocking foam (to replace the deteriorated foam on the front glass) on order. I'll post more photos as work progresses.
this is exactly what I need to do but no way I'll figure out how!

Default Parts list?

Nice pics Pete. It looks great!!! I am going to open up and clean my own MR78 soon.

Would you happen to have a parts list for the cleaning?? It looks like I will need 2 types of festoon lights and some blue filters and black (masking or electrical) tape. But I wanted to be sure I wasn't missing anything obvious.

The most important thing you can do for your MR78, other than having it professionally aligned, is to make sure the Tantalum cap for the power supply filtering on the multiplex board has been replaced with a new electrolytic.

Tantalum caps have been showing up failing as a short circuit over the last 10 years or so which causes the power supply to short out and fail. You end up with lights but no tuning or sound.

+1

These caps will fail.

Hi,
Great write-up (i’ve used it before, but it’s been a while). The light behind the right “tuning” meter just crapped out on my MR78. Looks like it is accessed from the bottom, correct? Also, please confirm bulb type - my Mc service manual has it listed as a “058-008”, not an “1847” as you have indicated.
Thanks in advance.

Also, if access to “tuning” lamp is from the underside, can I simply access by removing bottom plate only (without removing front glass, top panels etc.)?
