Woodstock Occurred in the Middle of a Pandemic
Here are links to several articles from reputable sources regarding Covid-19 and herd immunity. The bottom line seems to be:
- To develop herd immunity with Coronavirus infection rates, about 70% of the population needs to be immune. - Without a vaccine, that means 70% of the population needs to get Covid-19. At a mortality rate of .5%, conservatively that could result in over 1 million deaths - 2 million if the mortality rate is 1%. - we don’t know for sure yet whether someone becomes immune after recovering from Covid-19 - The most effective way to achieve herd immunity is with a vaccine - the most effective and reasonable approach I’ve heard so far is opening up some forms of commerce (e.g. shopping, manufacturing) as the curve flattens, but continuing to maintain social distancing and limits on size of gatherings until a vaccine is available, and be prepared to tighten up again if the infection rate makes a comeback. It concerns me when we talk about Covid-19 as if the only real risk is to older people and people with diabetes. For example, counties with a majority black population have a mortality rate 6 times the average. People with other congenital conditions are also at high risk, regardless of age. This is not just about old people and those who have neglected their health. I sometimes get the feeling (I don’t mean on AA, I respect all of the opinions expressed here) that there are some who think we just need to be prepared to sacrifice the old and the weak for the good of the gene pool and the economy, and it’s a scary thought that we could have come to that kind of place. Probably time for me to just go back to listening to music, I tend to get a little wound up on this topic, so my apologies if I’ve offended anyone. https://www.sciencealert.com/why-her...id-19-pandemic https://www.technologyreview.com/202...e-coronavirus/ https://www.discovermagazine.com/hea...ainst-covid-19 https://www.jhsph.edu/covid-19/artic...h-covid19.html

And as much as I'd like to stick my .02 cents into this conversation, I won't even bother this time around. Putting the time into a discussion and typing up lengthy posts only to have the thread shut down just isn't worth the effort anymore.

Thank you for your post. Older people contribute to our society; they are not worthless.

This tired ass argument again? Covid 19 is going to have a higher fatality count than those viruses despite lockdown measures in place. Without social distancing the fatalities would be sky high with an overwhelmed health care system and economy would have tanked regardless. Smarter people than you and I have thought this out.

We need to open the economy up before we do lasting damage to the country.

It was very clearly conveyed that COVID-19 discussions are inappropriate for this forum and would be shut down. I hope that occurs here soon.

A Tribute to the Wall Street Journal’s Editorial Page
Yet through all of this the Wall Street Journal has been prescient and a leading source of good sense the entire time. Barely a few days into the shutdown, on March 19, 2020, the page wrote the following. Financial markets paused their slide Thursday, but no one should think this rolling economic calamity is over. If this government-ordered shutdown continues for much more than another week or two, the human cost of job losses and bankruptcies will exceed what most Americans imagine. This won’t be popular to read in some quarters, but federal and state officials need to start adjusting their anti-virus strategy now to avoid an economic recession that will dwarf the harm from 2008-2009. The vast social-distancing project of the last 10 days or so has been necessary and has done much good. Warnings about large gatherings of more than 10 people and limiting access to nursing homes will save lives. The public has received a crucial education in hygiene and disease prevention, and even young people may get the message. With any luck, this behavior change will reduce the coronavirus spread enough that our hospitals won’t be overwhelmed with patients. Anthony Fauci, Scott Gottlieb and other disease experts are buying crucial time for government and private industry to marshal resources against the virus. https://www.aier.org/article/a-tribu...ditorial-page/ |
