Default San Antonio

Just got back from a week in the sun (75-80F) in San Antonio. Had not been there for 33yr and it was great. River Walk (we stayed at the Drury Inn & Suites) was very nice and this week was between spring-break and the NCAA tournament, so not too crazy. Think they've done an excellent job on the Alamo and several of the older hotels in town like the Menger (think Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders). The Mission San Jose was interesting and two museums in town (western art and Texas/regional history) are excellent. But, the food (Tex-Mex is our fav after French in France) was terrific. Steak fajitas, tamales, BBQ ribs, even the oysters, etc. Wife likes margaritas, but I stick with Dos XX amber. Being able to walk in the sunshine along the River Walk each day was a treat after our long winter around here (not counting our 2-weeks in the Caribbean in Jan). Great place to spend the last week of winter. Sandals, shorts & t-shirts. Montreal at the end of May to compare.

The only thing I remember about San Antonio is Lackland AFB where I took my basic training for the US Air Force. Of course that was 48 years ago so I imagine things have changed a lot.

Glad you enjoyed your time there and the 75-80 degree temps

Thanks. Highly recommended if you are into the River Walk type of thing and Tex-Mex food, as we are. We are dining at the La Margarita in Market Square (all Mexican goods - entertaining if nothing else) in the picture. Late June through mid-Sept might get a bit toasty and winter cans be cool, but mid-March thru the end of May and mid-Sept thru Thanksgiving are generally nice (may get wet in the fall). We are thinking of staying the month of March next year rather than going to FL. 18 mile paved bike path along the river and any number of interesting day trips available (Fredericksburg, Austin, Houston, etc.).

Ahhhhh.....San Antonio....lived there from 1st to 10th grade before moving to Austin.....still home to some of the best Tex-Mex in the world, but blast, has San Antonio grown, with more than 2.3MM people....one of the largest cities in the US...

BUT, our favorite time on the Riverwalk was always Christmas as the decorations are superb...yes, a little more chilly

Cheers.

Great choice for a vacation, its a fantastic attraction, and probably the best spots in Texas. I hope you got a chance to take the river tour.

My wife and I made frequent weekend trips until we had kids, it's unfortunately not kid friendly at all. If you like steak, I particularly enjoy the Little Rhein Steakhouse in the evening, they have a terraced seating near the "amphitheater".

I have very fond memories of a holiday in the Hill Country (a ranch in Bandera) and visits to San Antonio and Austin. Good to see the Alamo and the Tex Mex was excellent.

We paid a visit to Bjorn's which to me was an experience in superb customer service - I told them I was only window shopping but was made very welcome and demoed all their McIntosh gear as well as the famous THX room. I'd have walked out with a McIntosh if my British Airways baggage allowance had permitted! As it was I splashed $700-odd on headphones that I had not been planning to spend. If only my experience in similar hifi shops in the UK was so good...

Dan - any time we can escape the ice/snow for warmth/sunshine, I'm going to be happy. We lucked out on our two escapes this winter and left town the day the big storms arrived on 1/2/14 and then, again, for San Antonio. They were, indeed, excellent oysters. For the life of me I can't recall where they were from. Had three choices and simply ask our waitress to bring the freshest of their offerings. The table next to us observed our obvious delight and had the same.

We pretty much stayed with Tex-Mex, as we are big fans of same, on the RW. We did notice Rhein's when we walked and thought about a steak, but decided that we do well with same most anywhere these days and good Tex-Mex is pretty much in TX, so stuck with that. We likely would have eaten at Pappadeaux's if ithey had been on the RW, but did not stray.
