This is my first post and what a great thread to be doing it in!

My path has been interesting because I was a music producer before really getting in to high end gear. I was particularly in to production monitors such as the Yamaha NS-10 and then HS-80. Still have the Yamaha HS-80 - a great honest speaker!

But I'd always wanted to have a go at tube gear for easy listening so I made the jump into using Manley Labs monoblocks and mated those to Def Tech Mythos ST's. The reason is a lot of the producers I listen to, mainly electronic or sample based, add texture in their recordings and seeking an extreme polish to production isn't really always the goal. Communicating visceral emotion or recognising heritage is a large part of what I think is valuable. So it had to be polite to brutal recordings, and the Def Tech's were awesome.

About a year ago an opportunity to purchase Sonus Faber Amati Futura's presented itself...and I jumped at it! I mated it to Audio Research pre and power amps and havent looked back. I love them. They are honest, and suit the music I play and do not colour much at all IMO (I'd consistently heard the myth about that). Sonus Faber were to me always kind of for a special crowd, some would say the conservative jazz classical crowd, but trust me by saying that my community and I throw some vicious recordings at the Amati Futuras and they are wonderful!

Everybody around me celebrates my Amati Futuras and especially me - and yes I believe they look much better than the new Amati Traditions

Welcome Naderpug! I think you will find Audio Aficionado to be a great, civil, and educated crowd.

What Audio Research amps are you using? I use Doshi, which were developed to drive the low impedance Wilson speakers. They are 90 WPC, but drive my Futuras beautifully in my largish (17 X 34) listening room.

By the way, I share your perceptions of the B&W 802 D3 versus Futura, having auditioned them in the same room with same gear.

Dave

Hi Dave and thank you for the warm welcome! I've been lurking around here for while and really appreciate the experience from all contributors.

I'm using the LS27 as a pre, and DS450M's for power amps. Would have loved a Ref 5 as a pre but the damage to the wallet was a wee bit too much! The combo I've chosen has a nice balance, I'm happy, and the control over the Amati's was superb (less about the gear and more about the speaker). Like mentioned previously, we threw some brutal recordings at them and they lapped it up with ease and communicated what I know was in the recording precisely. That's important to me.

To boost dynamics, I'm using a Bryston BDA-3 DAC. Turntable is a Rega RP8.

My 'B' system consists of Manley Labs pre and power and the Mythos ST's with a NAD M51 DAC. Love that system for messing around and digging in the crates.

My favourite component in all of this is definitely the Sonus Faber Amati Futura's. They are interstellar!

My speakers

-Philips mono kassett/radio 1975-1980

-Pioneer boombox 1980-1986. Started my HiFi interest. Played with a Yamaha TT. Ortophon pickup.

-Yamaha speakers + Dux Sound Project 451 1986-1995. Learned me how important a big scene as well as the bottom end are.

-Acoustic Energy AE 100 and 107 1995-1997. Bought them back around 2002 and my son uses them now. Great speaker. Extremely well built and sound for the money.

-QLN Signature HDII Spitfield 1997-2002. Fantastic 2-way speaker that plays like a floorstander. To small for my big room when I moved though. Owned by one of my best friends now.

-Monitor Audio studio 50 2002-2007. Great speaker, good value for money. This was when MA still made real Hi-Fi.

- Bose (kitchen) 2005-today, terrible sound unfortunately.

-Uscher BE10 2007-2011. plays big an powerful, but can be a bit bright and aggressive from mid to treble. Loved them for some years but the treble trubbled me.

-Sonus faber Amati Futura 2011-2014, sold to my friend so I'm listen to them every week. May be the best speaker over all. The price, the look and the sound. It's nothing that they can't play. Love them.

-Sonus faber Guarneri Memento 2012-today. A speaker I probably never will sell. Musicality on top. Great look.

-Sonus faber Toy 2014-today. Not expensive but musicality is great. A bit lean but as surround speaker they works well.

-The Songs faber (Fenice) 2014-today. Can play anything. No shortcomings. Big orchestras or small solo violin is expressed in the right way. The most musical speaker I'v heard. The midrange is the key.

Yes. I think they will stay for a long time. But they have even more to show if I step up to even bigger amp than my Gryphon Antileon. My dream amp is Gryphon Mephisto.

Let's see, if we both buy a pair @ 250 lbs each; that's half a Ton of Power!

I really was hoping for a Ton of Power though.
