I went from CM9 to 804D2 and found it a huge leap in performance. But it also depends on your supporting electronics and accessories. Running everything through an AVR with standard cables, I can see (or hear) how there wouldn't be much of a difference.
But I am using a Devialet D120, and just the speaker swap alone made a huge difference for me. To top it off, I started playing around with cables, and found that I can extract so much more out of the 804D2 but changing out power cables, speaker wire, etc. I will say that the you can hear more change with cables in the 804D2 than you can with the CM9. I think someone said that the CM9s sounded "busy" and that's exactly how I would described them. The 804D have so much separations and control, and it only gets better with supporting accessories. I'm actually thinking of upgrading to 803D3 soon.... |

You might want to hold on to those 804D2s. The 804D3s are not getting the best reviews. I have not heard them myself, however.

Yes, and the reviews I read made that very point. But jeez, the price gap has really gotten wider, hasn't it? I wonder if they de-contented the 804D3 to keep the price down? However, if the reviews are correct that the 804D3 is not as good as the D2, that's not a smart move IMO -- the 800 series should all be no compromise builds, limited only by their respective size and number of driver configurations.

Where are you reading that? The one review I read was quite positive except of the $9k price.
