Venere,
I didn't attend AXPONA, but I did attend RMAF 2015. Something you said really stands out, "So get a speaker that fits your room both sonically and spatially. Too big or too small for the room is a fundamental mistake that no tweaking can overcome." So many want to say that speaker X is so much better than speaker Y, but it begins with finding a speaker that matches your room and sonic priorities. I recently changed from Aerial 7Ts to Monitor Audio PL500s. My room is L shaped, 20' width x 28' length, and the width of the L shape extending to 24'. Its not about the PL500s being better, but about them being more suitable for my relatively big room. Even with dual subs, the Aerials just couldn't give me the scale I was looking for. The Aerials are still great speakers to me, but there is just something about big speakers that can create the magic that smaller speakers can't. |

111 rooms on eight floors?!? Lourdy. That's a whole lotta gear to see and listen to.

Great pictures and thanks for a nice observational review Venere.

Yes, and I forgot to mention the Marketplace where they were selling everything from CDs and vinyl to headphone amps and turntables. And a very large room deficated only to headphones. Truly more than you can properly see in three days. Amazing. And a three day ticket was only $35. Unbelievalble bargain.

I live in DFW and go to ORD regularly. I was half-thinking about taking the first flight up Fri morning, then coming back on the last flight of the day, but clearly that would have only left me frustrated and with a spinning head.
I still gotta wonder what it was like for the unsuspecting guests who booked a room at this hotel with no idea what was going on around them. I always select a property away from the interstate and request a room away from elevator and vending in order to have a quiet peaceful room during the day and night. Imagine a similar guest's response when they never heard traffic, ice machines or elevators, but 111 sub-woofers instead! |

I'm a little late to this discussion but for what it's worth I agree with your observations. The Raidho equipment (including the Aavik electronics) sounded just fine and made me hanker for a pair of XT3s. I was impressed by the little integrated Aavik (although not by its price) as well. The MBL room was big fun. The sonic presentation was of a quality you'd imagine of the highest resolution, large scale PA system and produced the biggest sound I heard at the show seconded only by the Paragon (Alexx) room. Easy to overlook in the MBL "palace" was the unique and high performance reel to reel tape recorder used as a source for many of the MBL demos. Greg Beron's UHA Tascam based (very loosely) half track has to b one of the quietest tape machines I've ever heard. Excellent sound and appearance from this virtually hand built machine. For pure balance of sound that catered to my tastes, I thought the Sonus Faber 12th floor room was one of the sweetest sounding and smoothest of the show. We can easily agree on that. I forgot, unfortunately, to audition in the KEF room as I was very interested in hearing the Blades. One of the major oversights on my part, and it was only after I left that I realized I hadn't stopped in to hear them. I have a lot of respect fro KEF's engineering and have owned their products in the past. I guess it leaves me something to look forward to. I'm just skimming here, not having mentioned rooms that I eagerly anticipated but were disappointments for one reason or another (not always attributable to the products), nor have I remotely mentioned everything I liked or thought was really promising (Vapor's speakers for instance). There was a lot to take in and not as much time as I would have liked. I ran into a lot of old friends and seeing them was as much or more fun than getting to all the rooms, but being social absorbed time that ate into my allocation. Also wholeheartedly agree that a lot of demos used material that was of no interest to me musically speaking. I won't get into the whys and wherefores of that, but it is a matter of interest to me that exhibitors might go to all the trouble to come to a show without the broadest possible selection of high quality musical material that might cater to all tastes. Not a lick of Alison Krauss anywhere. C'mon! By exception, MBL had some of the best material in the building.....and the press of warm bodies in their room attested to that. I had a great time but wouldn't necessarily base my buying decisions on what I heard and saw there, although the show definitely added another data point on several items for me. I learned a lot too! __________________ Last edited by Pampero; 04-26-2016 at 09:23 AM. |

Thanks, Bart. One more comment on an unusual product tat I haven't seen mentioned here:
I found the Janszen demo room to be quite interesting. David Janszen is the engineering talent now running his father's once quite famous company . I remember when Janszen electrostatic speakers were highly regarded products and David is following in his father's footsteps making unique and highly competent complete systems. His diminutive active monitors put out smooth full range sound that really makes it hard to believe it's actually coming from speakers of their size. I had a lot of fun in that little room as well, and if I was looking for "monitor sized" speakers and had the budget, I'd consider the smaller Raidhos and probably check out the Janszens as well. It's amazing what these guys can squeeze out of a small box. |

The Janzsens were excellent. In that category I would also add the Dynaudio C1s I heard at the show. Amazing sound for their size. Amazing sound period. Not a fan of their styling but their sound is beyond reproach IMHO.
