You can always just turn the extra channels off...

That said, I don't see the point. I'm still on 5.1.

I am also on 5.1 and will probably always stay that way. I don't have a dedicated HT room. My music and movies are all in the living area. Adding more speakers likely won't ever happen.

The one benefit I CAN see is the mixing process. Atmos (and whatever DTS does) are supposed to mix/separate the affects "on the fly" based on the number of channels you have. It seems much more efficient than mixing several copies of the audio. Should that system ever gain traction for Blu-ray or streaming video, it would be nice to be able to decode and use it. However, there are so many Dolby/DTS systems in place that CAN'T use the 'on the fly' decoding/mixing that the industry will have to continue to provide the pre-mixed audio on Blu-ray or streaming media for many years to come.

Right. I actually have the back two speakers, just no good way to locate them that would be effective.

And 5.1 can sound pretty darn amazing with a unit like the SP3 and proper setup.

Do I need to do all the upgrades, or just the most recent one. Also, forgive my ignorance, because it's been a while. Do I need a windows based laptop and a serial cable?
Thanks,
David

You only need an Ethernet cable to connect to your router. Not sure about windows because that is what I happened to have. I hope the updates are cumulative, but I do not know.

Question about firmware upgrade: if I do an upgrade, do I lose all my settings? (Speaker size, levels, etc.) if so, that would be a major pain.
