Spending some more time with Huron tonight. It's different, but clearly better to my ear. I don't regard it as addressing issues with the prior release - I regard it as an entirely new DAC. Really good stuff, and it was, uhhhh, free.

I love Huron. If you listened to the dsd several months ago, give it another whirl. Totally different sound.

Will receive a DirectStream DAC soon. Do I install and listen with Torreys and then upgrade to Huron? Or upgrade and then listen?

Entirely up to you. It's easy to move between the two so the process shouldn't make the decision. To my ear, Huron easily bests Torrey's, but there are those who don't think so (although my anecdotal reading of boards and such indicates that the majority that try Huron prefer it).

So, for me, go with the best and stick with it, but I have the benefit of the comparison. You might do both just to familiarize yourself with the process, but it's so easy, that is only of marginal benefit.

Thank you Weirdcuba. Thinking about it, I should hear what it is like using Torreys first and then try Huron and decide which suits my system and me best.

I'm not understanding why it would take some getting use to if the sound quality is higher. That statement would indicate there are some associated negatives while to me higher sound quality would be a no brainer.

Thanks everyone for all the info on Huron. A few statements give me a little concern and also I noticed the file size's are about half of what Torreys was. I wonder how can they achieve better sound quality with less code.

At any rate the only way to find out is to give it a try. I'll wait for some days off so I can give Torreys a good listen to again before giving Huron a try.

The one thing I did like was hearing about the lower noise floor. The white noise from this unit has always been somewhat bothersome to me. It's clearly audible in my system between tracks or very low passages. Setting the filter to low does get rid of it but then I don't get enough gain.

3960 KB for Torreys versus 4048 KB for Huron? They're virtually identical.
