Default Cooling Fan Specs for MS 300 and MS 750

I upgraded my MS 300 by installing the MS 750 HDD. Works fine, but crashes 1-2 times a week (which the previous drive never did) and I suspect heat as one possibility. More than likely the larger drive runs a bit hotter and the MS 750's vents are nearer the drive and now I see that the two take different part numbers, the MS 300 fan is a 320192 whereas the MS 750 is a 320263. Can anyone tell me the specs of these or have units apart to get the fan maker's numbers off them?

I purchased the Silenx Ixtrema 60 for mine based on Dan’s recommendation, but never installed it. It’s yours for free if you’d like it.

You could try running it with the cover off for a few days. That should help determine whether it’s a heat-related problem.

Wow, that is most kind. Many thanks. I think I will try the cover off idea for a couple of weeks to see what develops but I may well come back to you on that. Shipping would be on me of course! I think I also want to look at the fan cycling to see if that seems right also. Easy to do with cover off.

If I remember right, there’s a page that shows the internal temperature.

I have the service manuals for both the 300 and 750 and don't see anything on temps there, not sure what you mean by "page" I will bet that the Seagate 750 gb runs hotter than the Maxtor 300 and that the different stock cooling fan and vent hole locations in the cover reflect that. If so, by putting the 750 into the 300 with no changes would seem to raise the temps and run the risk of random crashes. One time recently, the unit was playing a tune from i-Radio and it crashed. The sound it made was like someone abruptly jerking an audio tape for a split second. I am guessing that is the sound that a crashing hard drive (which spins of course) may make. Is heat the cause? Not proven but first place to look I think.

Presumably you have your servers video output connected to your tv. Poke around in Setup using the On-Screen Display (OSD) a bit. I looked in the manual as well, but couldn’t find anything related to a temperature display.

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall a status page in utilities or an information page buried somewhere that shows current internal (motherboard) temperature.

Connected to TV, yes. Will look for status page tonight. Thanks.

No temp readings in utilities or anywhere else that I could see.

Does anyone know if the fan in the MS300 is continuous or thermostatically controlled? If the latter, i don't want to change it out just because it isn't always running.
