I'm kind of surprised that after about a year of availability they still haven't sold out of the 100 they had made. I remember an original interview w/HW saying to hit their price point they had to have they made in China, which kind of goes against VPI's mission. I imagine it's a quality piece, though.

"Leung builds the 299D amps in the same VPI factory where the turntables are made, in Cliffwood, New Jersey (the chassis' metal parts are made in China)." from CNET...

Ah, that's good to hear. The interview I'm referring to was in 2014 so it looks like they found a way to build it in the US. Thumbs up for that.

Wonder how good (or bad?) the phono stage is?

Hello,

I am not on this forum normally but would like to report that I bought one and its a very nice unit. I was quite surprised at how compact it was compared to a former Vac Avatar SE that I had.

If you havent seen one up close I can tell you its built like a tank yet very clean looking. The sound is warm but dynamic and extended. I am more of an SET man but this "little guy" is quite fun to listen to. The remote is great and you can tell was not an afterthought. It's a nice metal piece and you can even switch from UL operatio to Triode from the remote.

Truly a piece worthy of having Harry's stamp on it.

Hugo

There are a few listed by places like Sound Stage Direct and have seen at least one on Audigon.
