How much memory/hard-drive you need depends on your needs. The Sony unit comes with a 1TB hard drive. I had about 11 thousand tracks in it and it was not even half full. For music functions, 8GB RAM is fine. |

Glenn, For the utility you describe, I would simply use a laptop with JRiver. (Once you get into Digital, ROON will likely become a better choice). Nicoff is correct to suggest not to travel around with the Sony as it is a heavy audiophile quality piece of kit. To start, a 2TB HD is more than large enough to hold hires files. If you need more space, you can always connect a larger portable USB 3.0 hard drive. Make sure the laptop has a CD drive or the ability to connect a USB CD drive so you can rip CDs. JRiver will rip CDs (EAC and dbPoweramp are also great choices). Craig

Yes, you'd be able to load the Sony transfer software on your PC which would transfer the files you select (or all of specific extensions like WAV, FLAC, etc.) to the drive(s) of the Sony. The Sony will only play files stored on its dedicated internal or external drives, not directly from other drives on your network.

Hey...do you guys know if this HAP Z1ES is a TRUE differential unit?
last night I tried an XLR connection to my McIntosh c1100 preamp. Been using unbalanced and its noticeably louder than the XLR. So I emailed Ron C from McIntosh. His response... Quote:

Timobi, Do you have the latest firmware in the Sony?

Ok. I read somewhere that early on the Sony had an issue with the XLR settings but that it was corrected via firmware. That’s why I was asking. Nothing else I can add! |

Not much discussion here of late. Hopefully, that means everyone is pleased with their HAP-Z1ES. Am still cogitating about which music server to go with and am wondering if the latest iteration of the Sony goes with SSD or is it still spinning a HD?
Also, my CDs are currently ripped to microSD chips in a FLAC format. Will I be able to upload those into the Sony thru its USB port?

Glenn - The HAP-Z1ES is still configured from the factory with a conventional hard drive (not an SSD.) The Sony does not directly support connection of an SD or microSD card, but if you connect the SD card to a PC on your network you could then copy the desired files to the internal Sony HD either using the Sony music transfer app or via File Explorer or similar software since the Sony HD shows up as accessible storage on your network.

I’m not using mine all that much anymore, only because my DAC (Schiit Gumby) doesn’t do DSD. I’ve gone back to JRiver running on a new i7 based PC. You can “play” the files from the microSD with a USB adapter. However, you can only load files to the internal HD via the software (PC, probably a Mac too) and an Ethernet cable or WiFi. Mike |
