What's the best software on the laptop? JRiver is mentioned quite often.

If I then decide on the Sony for my home system at a later date and have the music files on my laptop HD, will I be able to run them thru the Sony software into the HAP-Z1ES?
The Sony unit weights more than 30 pounds out of the box and it is a fairly good size! It is a hefty piece and a sensitive electronic component. Unlike a laptop, that is designed to be carried around, the Sony is not designed as a mobile device. Think of it as a component for your music system not unlike your preamp or your DAC that is meant to stay put with the rest of your stereo system.

How much memory/hard-drive you need depends on your needs. The Sony unit comes with a 1TB hard drive. I had about 11 thousand tracks in it and it was not even half full. For music functions, 8GB RAM is fine.

Glenn,

For the utility you describe, I would simply use a laptop with JRiver. (Once you get into Digital, ROON will likely become a better choice). Nicoff is correct to suggest not to travel around with the Sony as it is a heavy audiophile quality piece of kit.

To start, a 2TB HD is more than large enough to hold hires files. If you need more space, you can always connect a larger portable USB 3.0 hard drive.

Make sure the laptop has a CD drive or the ability to connect a USB CD drive so you can rip CDs. JRiver will rip CDs (EAC and dbPoweramp are also great choices).

Yes, you'd be able to load the Sony transfer software on your PC which would transfer the files you select (or all of specific extensions like WAV, FLAC, etc.) to the drive(s) of the Sony. The Sony will only play files stored on its dedicated internal or external drives, not directly from other drives on your network.

Hey...do you guys know if this HAP Z1ES is a TRUE differential unit?

last night I tried an XLR connection to my McIntosh c1100 preamp. Been using unbalanced and its noticeably louder than the XLR. So I emailed Ron C from McIntosh.

His response...

Quote:
Hi Tim,

All balanced inputs on ALL McIntosh models are true differential. Since these are using two identical audio signals and one is out of phase with the other we drop the sensitivity by 3 dB. once the signal is inside the C1100 the signal will be processed and one side will be phase inverted so we have music + music = twice as much music. So the volume stays the same as an unbalanced input the gain is -3db lower on the balanced input legs.

This sounds like your streamer has a balanced output that is NOT true differential. In this case we would recommend you use the unbalanced output of the streamer.

Thanks again,
Ron Cornelius

Timobi, Do you have the latest firmware in the Sony?

Ok. I read somewhere that early on the Sony had an issue with the XLR settings but that it was corrected via firmware. That’s why I was asking. Nothing else I can add!

Not much discussion here of late. Hopefully, that means everyone is pleased with their HAP-Z1ES. Am still cogitating about which music server to go with and am wondering if the latest iteration of the Sony goes with SSD or is it still spinning a HD?

Also, my CDs are currently ripped to microSD chips in a FLAC format. Will I be able to upload those into the Sony thru its USB port?

Glenn - The HAP-Z1ES is still configured from the factory with a conventional hard drive (not an SSD.) The Sony does not directly support connection of an SD or microSD card, but if you connect the SD card to a PC on your network you could then copy the desired files to the internal Sony HD either using the Sony music transfer app or via File Explorer or similar software since the Sony HD shows up as accessible storage on your network.

I’m not using mine all that much anymore, only because my DAC (Schiit Gumby) doesn’t do DSD. I’ve gone back to JRiver running on a new i7 based PC.

You can “play” the files from the microSD with a USB adapter. However, you can only load files to the internal HD via the software (PC, probably a Mac too) and an Ethernet cable or WiFi.
