Which is why I find it silly to not at least have a unit compatible with both formats. I really wanted to buy this disc player, had it on dealer loan for some time. I ended up spending more and bought the Esoteric K-01X. Very happy with it and gave no further thought of owning a CD9.

Same here! Definitely an ARC fan here, but not their disc players.

I recall reading somewhere that Audio Research considered SACD a flawed format so they were not supporting it in their players. I don't know whether that's really the reason their players don't do SACD or whether they made that up as a justification for not including SACD playback.

I never made the leap to SACD because of the limited selection of titles that I would actually buy. I have around 2000 conventional CD's, almost all of which are not available in SACD. On the other hand, the selection of HD music files that you can download is getting fairly decent, and these formats are supported by the DAC inputs of the CD9. It's so easy to buy and download HD files online and play them back from my laptop into the DAC inputs of the CD9.

I said above, it's simpler than that

ARC standardized on the Philips CD Pro 2 CD transport for their Reference CD players (top loader with a puck.)

The Philips CD Pro 2 transport only reads Red Book format CDs and CDRs, not SACDs.

The Philips CD Pro 2 is arguably the best transport ever made, so they went with the best transport for the format most people will use.

Don't Bother Red Book, although some CDs are recorder well, SACD is the way to go, the Esoteric K01Xs is a Gem, put a good power cord and you will be in heaven. And matches ARC pretty good, only if the display could be change in green, I like my ARC color Green.

Yeah, just ignore the $8K or so price increase for the Esoteric…

I don't have a lot of SACDs, but the ones I do have are easily among my best. The availability of SACD classical music is pretty good. I would not consider a CD-only player (I have an Esoteric K-03X).

It’s still an interesting product positioning move on AR’s part - to build a car that won’t drive on the nicest roads.

Arguably it makes sense to design a car that works the best on 99% of the roads out there than one that only really shines on the Autobahn.

My Esoteric shines on both roads.
