I have the D300 as well.

You can pick one up for under $1700 and get yourself a bunch of cool lenses to have fun with with the extra money you'll save over the more expensive cameras.

If you're not a real pro, some of the features on the pricier bodies will be useless to regular guys like me (and maybe you as well).

The D300 has enough stuff to keep you interested and take some amazing pix.

it depends on whether you have any legacy lens or digital lens'. I would agree that the D300 is a great way to go especially if you will stay with digital lenses. If you have no current lenses then another alternative is the Nikon D700 which is full format similar to the older film cameras. The D300 and most other digital cameras have a smaller sensor which makes most lenses longer by a factor of 1.4 or 1.5. So a 50mm lens becomes 70mm, or a 20mm wide angle is really about 28mm to 30mm in 35mm Camera terms.
here is a great resource for camera. Digital Camera Reviews and News: Digital Photography Review: Forums, Glossary, FAQ

A Nikon D40 or D60 will do a great job and will cost less than $700 with a zoom lens. I have a D40 that I use when I want something lighter and easier to tote around, and it takes excellent pictures.

The problem with those 2 cameras is that they will not autofocus on all lenses.

You have to have the motor built into the lens like an AF-S lens. This may or may not pose some problems.

True, but I believe all of the DX lenses are AF-S, and certainly the ones that come in the kits are. Since he said it would be his first SLR, it should be easy to make sure that any lens he gets is AF-S.

Another difference with the D-40 and D-60 is that they use SD memory cards instead of compact flash cards. The SD cards are smaller, lighter, and cheaper, but may not be as robust as the compact flash cards the D-300 uses.

I went from a Nikon D80 to a Nikon D700, I chose the D700 because the light was superior to the D300, and an FX sensor allows greater detail, generates less noise with higher ISO values, ... I found that it performs very much like a D3...

you'll see that a FX format lens is slightly more expensive, but also offers better performance. Every 'high end'/professional lens today (with a few exceptions) is made for an FX sensor, so it's not like they're harder to find neither

If you decide to go for a 'consumer' DSLR camera, go for a D90 instead of a D60, the perfomance difference is huge...

and if you think money is no object at all, skip Nikon, and go for a Hasselblad

one last note: which ever camera it's going to be, for lenses, don't only check out Nikon (if it's going to be nikon ), look at Sigma lenses too, great value and exceptional quality...

Keep them spinning,
Bert.

In case you didn't read all of the posts, Ivan was asking for recommendations for a "top shelf" digital SLR and Dj_AmTraX was asking for recommendations for a digital SLR under $1000. Your suggestion of a D-700 is certainly a very good one for a "top shelf" camera, but it is also way, way over the <$1000 price range. It's also around a $1000 more than a D-300.

I'm sure you're correct about the technical advantages of a full frame (FX) sensor, but I get excellent performance from my D-300, and I really like the extra "reach" I get with the 1.5 multiplier factor that makes my 200mm lens have the 35mm equivalent field of view of 300mm.
