I approached Drobo a few weeks ago with a proposal for a biz dev position, but unfortunately I believe they still consider photographers, video editors, and small businesses as their core markets while their competitors are going to eat their lunch if they don't actively engage our digital music and video markets. Cord cutting is real, and it's going towards streaming or storing digital files. I've ripped every single CD and Blu-Ray title I own (~25GB each). Also, cloud computing makes no sense for us. Too many bandwidth, capacity, security, and privacy issues. Storage is just so cheap now that it makes sense.

Drobos, in particular, are very easy to set-up. They have the 5D that connects directly and is the fastest, and the 5N that connects to your router and is available to all devices on your network. I prefer the 5N for a number of reasons. Synology is another big player and many people love their products, but I feel that they are geared a bit more toward power users. Still pretty easy, however.

Pretty much all you need to do is install their Dashboard application, connect the Drobo, slap in as many drives as you want, let it do it's thing, and then use the Dashboard to set up any "shares" (partitions) and user accounts you want. There are a few other small things that you can set-up as well.

They have live demos for business owners on-line everyday at:

drobo.com/special/info/drobo_for_business_live.php

Let them know they need to be looking at actively pursing home-based digital media storage solutions, hire Josh Junker, and sponsor AA.

Definitely feel free to let me know if you have any questions, and I'll do my best to help out.

Default One step backward and two steps forward...

Lot's of housekeeping today since I am without either a pre-amp or DAC at the moment...
  1. Centered MC452. Went back to the 4 ohm taps.
  2. Replaced a Thomasville sofa with an Ethan Allen reclining chair. If things go my way after tax season I may add an Eames Lounge chair as well.
  3. Raised local-dimming Sony XBR. I've wanted to do this for a long time and now that I had the reclining seat there was no better time than the present. It gives me a better peripheral view of the display and raises the highly reflective surface up and hopefully out of the way a bit.

Okay that's about it for today while I decide on whether I want to go with an MC2500 or a Berkley Alpha DAC 2 with the BADA USB->SPDIF converter...

Junker,

Nice setup! Really appreciate you notes on the Drobo and NAS. Also, you won't be disappointed with the Eames chair...I have one and love it.

Thanks Ritmo! Looks like the best listening seat IMO! Trying to do my best with the place until I get back up to Northern California...

I like the Palisander / Vicenza Black, as well as the Walnut / All-Grain Black combos.

Just curious...Do you have the the Palisander (too loud?) or Walnut? Without seeing it the pebble-grain sounds nice, but maybe not worth giving up the Palisander for...

Default T.H.E. Show Newport

I'm planning to attend T.H.E. Show Newport the last weekend of May, to listen to some of the newer speakers and DACs.

If anyone is planning on attending shoot me a PM if you want to catch-up for a drink.
