Default 1957 REL Precedent tuner

I just found a REL Precedent tube tuner. Considered the gold standard by many. Tube sound. And the most incredible looks. Really.

It was hard to find one. They cost around $400 in 1957, which must have been enormously expensive.

Highly recommended to go with Shindo!

Setting a Precedent | pitch perfect audio

Ps - sorry for the typo in the title.

Great tuner! I think they went out of production in 1954, if not mistaken. I used one in my system for many years, daily. Currently, I've been using a REL 646B Green monster which was the predecessor to the Precedent and often used as a relay tuner in broadcast in the late 40's and early 50's. And its green! I'm also looking forward to getting my Rohde and Schwarz BN1508 modified for US deemphasis and into my system. I love FM, just spent the past few days listening to the Sun Ra centennial broadcast on WKCR.

Yes I did get the date wrong.

What's amazing is how beautiful the 646C is. I just am amazed at it. (Sorry, the B isn't close in looks but you knew that). Even turned off, a guest commented on it today.

And it sounded great when I listened to it earlier.

I'm a huge fan of the industrial design of both the B and C. The B and C are both gems sonically. The Nice thing about the B is its output stage which is a 10 watt push pull amp which can be used as a power amp, not so interesting for Shindo owners, and used as a 500ohm output for use with a preamp which is what I do. The output transformer has various taps for this. The B was available is several versions both technically and physically. One version has no amp stage, which seems to be the rarest. They made a table top version in a beautiful box and a rack mount version. I have one of each of those. The chassis is made of duraluminum which is pretty exotic for a tuner chassis. The C was also available rack mount for radio station use. I found one of these recently for a good friend. The C is one of the most beautiful industrial designs in audio. Being a midcentury guy, this suits my tastes quite well. I've always been curious about the design and who did it. I guess that info is lost to history.
Rumor is the 646C put the company into bankruptcy. The tuner was too expensive and never sold enough to cover the R&D. I suppose the suicide of Major Armstrong didn't help things.

Welcome to the REL club! You'll have many good hours pulling in your favorite stations and admiring the faceplate. If you can, get a rooftop antenna. This helped the sound of my tuners quite dramatically. The majority of antennas are now out of production, the Antennacraft FM6 is pretty much the last man standing and costs a whopping $20. I pull in WKCR here in NY from about 35 miles away with full reception and no interference. Listening right now and since 6:30AM. It'll be playing until my BBQ ends late tonight. I use a custom Auditorium 23 Y interconnect to feed my Shindo preamp.

Thanks Jonathan.

I am looking for that little antenna plug (the clear plastic one). If you have any thoughts let me know.

Yes, the B is also attractive in a different way but not so sublime. Just staring at the P R E C E D E N T lettering across the front is so cool.

That plastic connector was long gone on mine and replaced with standard five way binding posts. I terminated my 300ohm antenna wire with banana plugs which makes life very easy. You just need to make reasonable contact, the terminations are not so critical in my experience. I actually use alligator clips to jump from the banana terminations of my wire to the screw terminals on the 646B. Works perfectly. Very non audiophile, which is a bonus

P R E C E D E N T!
