Default What did I start?

On a whim I purchased my first TT today in over 25 years. It is a Pro ject 1-Xpression with an Ortofon 2M cart. I realize that it may not be of the same caliber as the rest of my gear. I paid $400.00 for the kit used.

What I'm concerned with is two things. First, when I turn up the volume above 42 on the C1000, a deep physical and audio rumble develops and it seems it wants to tear the walls down. If I turn my subs off, the rumble disappears. The TT is centered between the subs with about 4.5 feet distance from sub to TT. I'm using some old AudioQuest Viper IC's I had laying around the house and the TT is grounded to the C1000. Any suggestions?

Secondly, my wife is in the basement ordering vinyl! She spent about an hour listening today and prefers it to a CD.

I realize that if I pursue this, a higher grade table is in the cards but I need to figure out this rumble before I get too deep and my wife buys too many records!!!!!

Gordon

P.S. I forgot how sweet vinyl sounds. There is something special going on here!

You may have to change your phono impedance and gain adjustments on your pre amp. Check your owners manual.

Sounds like a grounding issue to me. If you have a Linn dealer in your area you might consider taking your TT in for a checkup.
Your wife has good taste.

I tried adjusting the impedence on the pre and I had the same result on any setting. All gains are set to zero.

My rumble has a pulsing to it from the subs. Almost to 2/4 time!

Are your woofers "pumping" -- i.e., moving in & out repeatedly?? If that's what you mean by rumble -- there are several possibilities:

1. Move speakers or TT farther away from each other
2. Mechanical resonance of the arm/cartridge arrangement falls outside of 7-12Hz. Investigate compliance numbers with the arm/cartridge you have.
3. You could have a grounding issue -- try attaching the TT ground in another location.

If none of these apply -- suggest & hate to say this as it adds another component -- get a KAB rumble filter which eliminates extremely low frequencies which are attributable to "woofer pumping."

"woofer pumping"? Good lord, another term I never heard before. This is why I started with an inexpensive table, to learn and spend more money! Why would the subs pump so violently and low?

Gordon

How far can the TT be from the rest of the stack? I could move it but it would require IC's about 20 ft long.

Yep -- woofer pumping -- common term for what you are experiencing.

What causes it -- in most cases, acoustic feedback thru the analog side.

You'll have to experiment with placement -- it could mean a few inches, to a foot or feet away from each other.

Same issue with ground attached or not.

If I relocate the TT, how long of an IC can be used before the signal begins to degrade? The TT is slightly behind the front plane of the subs.

I guess it's time to start reading up on this.
