EAR 324P Balanced mode.
Tried using a pair of balanced cables instead of single ended from the EAR 324P phono stage to the Ayre KX-R preamp this evening. Wow, what a difference! Few things that jumped out right away were the bass, imaging and focus. Bass is in a different league all together as compared to the single ended cables. Big, bold and gutsy. The images are more focused and soundstage increased in both width and depth. There was also a noticeable tonal shift. I had to step up to 47K and 470pf loading setting to bring it back to my preference. Gorgeous sound. Why didn't I try balanced earlier?

Some of this positive change may have been due to the KX-R preamp. Charlie Hansen doesn't like the single ended from what I heard and designed his preamp around the balanced ins and outs. Single ended are there for convenience, not for serious performance from what I understand.

Serge.......I am surprised that you did not choose the balanced output as your first choice for conneting the Ear 324 to the Ayre KX-R preamp.

I don't have balanced inputs on my MA6500 but would have used them over the RCA's if they were available. Going from RCA's to XLR's on my MC2102 yielded a increase in volume and over all improvement in detail, but only with the right XLR interconnects.
I do not plan on replacing my MA6500 with another MAC,or any other brand, simply for the XLR connections because upgrades with the LP12 and pickup options will yield a better improvement , in my opinion. Some will not agree with this philosophy, but when it comes to the LP12 using RCA's vs XLR's I really can't hear any difference in sound(there is a little increase in volume vs RCA's but no improvement in overall detail) so I focus on other things that I know will make a noticeable improvement.
