Default Thnk 'yer fast?

The Isle of Man TT motorcycle race are on this weekend.

One of my favorite videos showing just how fast these guys go on real roads on the IoM.

These guys are so fast that the helicopters flying overhead shooting racing video cannot keep up with them....

https://youtu.be/l8Mu4hQEaEw

'Yer not so fast....

While exciting, the IoM TT races are considered the most dangerous racing events in the world due to lack of safety for the racers and the spectators. No international organizing group will homologate the races due to the lack of safety measures and crowd controls and most, if not all racing teams will not allow their riders to compete as so many racers have been killed/injured over the years. A somewhat ghoulish attraction.

True, but it hasn't stopped the event from occurring or racers wanting to compete in it.

It is crazy, and dangerous, as Glenn has pointed out. As such, the lads will be at it again this weekend.

Racers gonna race...

I've watched clips of the IOM other times, but it always amazes me. So fast, so cool.

I believe the Isle-of-Man TT organisers do take safety very seriously as they ensure that the thirtyseven and three quarter mile circuit is as safe as possible with runout bales in place etc but so much depends on the conduct of the spectators.
The spectators are mostly riders and devoted enthusiasts who are usually very responsible but as the competitors are now completing this circuit in around an incredible 16 minutes and at those speeds accidents and sadly fatalities do occur.
As a spectator the I-O-M TT is one of the most thrilling competitions I have ever seen.

266 racers killed thus far (and counting). Something more than 2.5/yr average.

Unfortunately that's the name of the game. How many people have died climbing Everest, in light aircraft, horseriding etc. Doesn't seem to deter participants.

Yes, there are far more people killed in the USA riding horseback per year than at the TT. Especially people who ride “Western” without wearing...a helmet. Same applies to states that repealed mandatory motorcycle helmet laws. If memory serves, Kansas had something like a 60% increase in motorcycle fatalities the year following its repeal of its mandatory motorcycle helmet law. Yeah, that was real smart, Kansas.
