I see E-Stat beat me to the punch with HP's setup! Which, unlike me, he's actually heard. But Wendell Diller at Magnepan agrees that Maggies sound great in that room, despite its small size.

As E-Stat said, shape of the room matters along with size. I think the general rule with planar dipoles of any description is that they're less affected by room acoustics than boxes, but as Volks says they require more careful placement and that means experimention in the beginning. You can't just "throw them on a shelf" and get optimum results.

One thing, they do want to be at least a few feet out from the wall behind them. If that space isn't available, the Maggie on-wall models are a better choice.

Vego99,

Have you thought about trying the MMGs in your room as a test. There's a 60 day trail/trade up that's offered by Magnepan.

That way you'll get an idea if you like the sound in your room and they are a lot easier to move around.

The MMGs sound great and I understand with the new .7 upgrade the sound even better.

I started that way, kept the MMGs for surround and bought the 1.6QRs. They're augmented by a pair of Velodyne HGS15s in my 19.5X11X8 room.

Hope this helps.

Bob

You can get MG-12's and QR-1.6's for under a grand used in excellent condition. I think a used pair of Maggies is one of the very best bargains going in audio today!

I think I paid $575 for my used MG-12's a few years back, I consider them my best audio purchase to date.

Veggo99: Your front room is beautiful. Your wife is going to kill you if you try to put Maggies in it as they will dominate the room. They need to be at least 3 feet out from the main wall and preferably further. Look at the HP pic E-Stat provided and note that while those are 20.7s that room is bigger than yours and the bay is the whole wall unlike your room. You will also have to move the furniture around if you want to put the speakers on the short wall with the bay. The back room would be perfect for any sized Maggies. Like West Grove (you're not far from me).
