The phono stages in those preamps are very limited in more ways than one. You have fewer choices for pickups as the there are no options for different loads. A serious vinyl person does not want to settle for only ONE setting for MM or MC pickups A dedicated phono stage with it's own power supply, variable load selections, quality of construction, are only a few reasons for a separate phono stage. And you're correct regarding a good vinyl playback going beyond only a LP12/tonearm/pickup -a really good dedicated phono stage is also needed. Last edited by gregswaim; 06-06-2009 at 10:18 AM. |

Interesting comment. I noticed yesterday that the C1000 does not give the choice for multiple load, and the 2300 does, if I make no mistake. I decided to buy the 1000 anyway because : 1) I listened to it during a long session on vinyl at Jean Marc ( jmajma) 's home and with a fair and not expensive TT, it was just anyhting I could need. The sound quality was just exceptionnal. 2) After reading Dan's review, comparing the 2 separates. I trust Dan's ears very much, and you can see that in my signature... ! 3) If Dan comes to Paris one day, now I'm sure he will either call me fo a drink, or even better, have its room in my house, instead of staying in a hotel ! Without kidding, after hearing the C1000, I'm not sure the phono load selection is so important.... But I understand it could be very important for most separates.... Best wishes, Jérôme

Jerome, This does NOT sound correct. Here is a direct quote lifted from the McIntosh website regarding PHONO on the C1000: PHONO SECTION FLEXIBILITY Moving Magnet has adjustable capacitance from the remote to allow flexibility in matching your favorite turntable. Moving Coil offers adjustable resistance also from the remote control for the same flexibility. These are the same features available on the C2300. I couldnt envision McIntosh leaving these features off of the C1000. Can someone who owns a C1000 confirm?? Jason

The C500 and C1000 seem to have identical phono stages and they are both adjustable. Since I've had the C500, I looked into the features but did not actually try the phono stage.
Phono MM, 47k ohms; 50 to 750pF, in 50pF steps Phono MC, 25, 50, 100, 200, 500 or 1,000 ohms; 100pF Jerome, in any case, I'm sure the C1000 phono stage will do your TT justice. If you ever move really high up on the TT/arm/cartridge scale then you can look into an outboard, dedicated phono stage. |

Thanks Serge, Yes I really intend to upgrade my TT and buy the same one as Jean Marc. I will not need an outboard phono stage. What I heard at Jean Marc's house was something of an audio Nirvana. Best wishes, Jérôme

Jerome, you definately made the right decision on the C1K setup. What a marvelous piece of gear and I'm sure you got it for a song from AC (and perfectly working, to boot).
I'm sure Dan would be willing to help you set it up for a little tour in bordeaux...
