You'd also be well served to check out the Ayre QB-9, USB DAC that uses asynchronous mode on the USB port.

I have a Audio Research DAC 7 which is connected to a Mac Mini via toslink. The server works well especially for weekend background music or social gatherings but I prefer the sound from cd's when I want to listen to music. I like the DAC 7 and I am still in the process of breaking it in (600 hrs).
