There is no problem hearing authoritative deep bass and feeling it as well, without a hint of upper bass exaggeration, bloat, or room compression. Dialing back the crossover point to 38Hz has delivered an awesome tweak to my system without having spent a single penny. That's what I call fantastic! This single change has produced an instant and remarkable performance boost for my main system.

BTW, Joanne Shaw Taylor - White Sugar compact disc delivers some serious blues guitar and singing. She can lay down some blistering blues licks on her Fender. Pick this CD up if you like blues done right. If you can keep the volume down on the track "Time as Gone", see your doctor, there's something wrong with you.

Dan,
Your thread made me look at my settings, and decide to adjust my F112.
Should be able to get to it on Wednesday. I'll let you know how I make out.

Also, I love that Joanne Shaw Taylor CD. I've had it for a while now. That girl can play some mean guitar.

Chuck.......I will be looking for your comments. Without the MEN220, you will be adjusting the crossover point on the Fathom control. I would suggest you set the lowpass filter slope to 24dB if you are not already using that level of attenuation. The Linkwitz-Riley forth order crossover setting I am using on the MEN220 is a 24db slope, and gets the subwoofer output rolled off quickly above the crossover point. That is the setting that Ron-C suggested. It is working perfectly for me. Keep us posted.

Track 21 or maybe 24 of All the Pretty Horses (movie soundtrack) is a very simple song featuring Marty Robbins voice. I have never heard any speaker reproduce that track Like the Electa/A's and Rel Stentor, simply stunning. Anything else is a letdown.

The original with the big silk dome was very cool. Original Stentor would have crossed a touch higher than later models too.

Dan, Bill: It really works. I tried several settings on the F113's and found that 39 was the best crossover point to dramatically bring out more music and detail in the bass. After doing this, I then discovered that moving the Master Volume controls to 11 instead of 9 was a huge improvement in the deepest bass. I spent 2 fun hours experimenting and the difference is definitely worth it.

Howard.......This is why Audio Aficionado is so much fun for me. A couple of guys named Ivan and Bill fiddle around fine tuning a high-end two channel system, and tell us about it, mentioning that the subwoofer crossovers were readjusted to a much lower setting with extremely positive results. I pick up on their change to the subs, and make similar adjustments to my Fathom, discovering a very nice improvement in bottom end definition, and report on it here. Bingo, now Jim's thinking about getting his Fathom back into his two channel system, Chuck is going to go through the exercise Wednesday, and you had two hours of fun this afternoon with strikingly positive results. There will be more people making this discovery before it's over. A tip from Bill at Ivan's home, and look what happened. You gotta love a place where upgrades can happen for free by just sharing information. Way to go.

About a month ago a friend of mine visited my house. He is a Martin Logan guy as I am and he was interested in how well the JL's played. We tinkered for a bit and as strange as it may seem, both my 112's are at 37 vice 60 and the volume at 9.75 vice 8 using the 24 slope vice 12. I had thought they were dialed in nicely but the changes brought a new richness to the bottom end that just blossomed after the adjustment.

Who knows, in a few months I may go even lower/higher and find something new. Thank goodness nothing is written in stone!!!

Gordon.......Very interesting. You're right about nothing being written in stone, which is why this hobby is so much fun.

Dan, as an aside, it is good to be back here again. Just in time I think for Ivan to send my annual dues!! I'd have hated to let it run out!!

Word to the smokers: Stay off Chantix. The cure is worse than the disease!!
