Pole Saw Anyone?

Our lot has 20, or so, large oak trees and they need some trimming of the lower branches (removal) and am wondering what a good pole saw might be. Are battery powered saws powerful & the charge long-lasting enough to be useful? Would prefer to stay away gas powered to avoid the mess of a 2-cycle engine. Anyone have any experience with a pole saw that they can recommend?

Take it from me, the best saw for trimming 20 large oak trees is one held by an arborist climbing the tree as you stand on the ground with a laser pointer and you say, "cut this branch."

Besides, someone who really knows how to prune a tree (not a hack with a chainsaw) will thin the upper branches for better appearance, air circulation and future growth.

After a disastrous wildfire in 1978, I replanted my 40 acre forest with 35,000 conifers. Today those trees are 40-50' tall, and we are following our original Forest Management Plan which calls for thinning and removal of dead lower branches. I have 5 Stihl chainsaws and use them regularly. Their polesaw is excellent, as are all their products. If I hired the work, the normal $200-400/hour arborist fee would be prohibitive. This very rewarding work keeps this 72 year old very fit.

I'll check out the Corona and Stihl (also use Stihl chainsaw).
As you state, the aroborist fees are near prohibitive. They won't come out without a full crew with basket-truck and I don't need/want that for this work.

Trimming WHAT YOU WOULD OR COULD trim with a pole saw will take an arborist who knows what he's doing a few hours. They do not need a truck with a basket. The guys who do my property climb the trees with a harness and I use a laser to point out specific areas I want trimmed and let them do the rest. I had a lot of work done a few months ago taking out 10 dead/dying 30 foot hemlocks hit by an insect disease, pruning 8, 40 foot pines, cutting out a dead 20 foot dogwood and thinning and elevating branches on a 70 foot oak. Seven guys were there nonstop working for about six hours and it was only $1500--the first big pruning job in about 7-8 years. It was well worth the money.

There is no way I could have done what they did with a pole saw or even a chain saw because I can't climb far up a tree to trim, and they can. Also, you couldn't get a basket truck to where the trees needing pruning were anyway.

I have a Stihl KombiSystem pole trimmer and the extension, works well.

Hmm? I have more than 20 trees in my yard plus two fence rows that i have to deal with. I use that pole saw, a lopper, a small corona pull saw and a Stihl chain saw.

I fail to see the humor.
