Thank you!
In looking at the D1100 manual, I see no mention of a passthru feature and looking at the rear panel shows no passthru trigger so I can only conclude that this is not a feature of the D1100

As for what route to go it depends a lot on you and your musical tastes. I prefer a tube pre-amp vs SS and favor non-Mac DAC's. That is why I have a C500t along with a dCS dac.

By the way, I also initially had a C2300 with a 452 and it was a great combo. The 601's which I have now do have a slight edge in soundstage and overall body.

For now I would spend the money on a pre-amp and let the 452 break-in. As most will tell you, it takes about 100hrs or so for it to break-in.

Enjoy.

From my experiences I’d agree with Edward and Dan - let that 452 run in and you will hear a difference - as for the pre-amp there are obviously lots of options but I chose to stick with McIntosh and went with a C2500 (C2600 is the updated model) over a C52 to introduce tubes with my SS MC452

For me the pre-amp was a significant improvement in SQ for my system

Enjoy the journey!

Thank you Dan and Edward. That's a bummer as it would probably be a great direction for me to take.
I think that at this point I will be aiming at adding a C52. Also reading everyone's comments, it seems that I would benefit more from adding a 2-channel pre-amp than upgrading the MC452 to 601's.

Default New to Mcintosh (and forum) - Excited To Begin My Journey!

Just add a preamp, tube or ss as you wish, before you go with 601's

As many have mentioned a dedicated two channel preamp is the way to go. I would get the best one you could afford. The C1100 is killer, I own a C500.
The only concern may be the lack of a built in DAC but that is what the D1100 is for.
The C2600 has a one box solution which I would choose over the C52 as I love tubes.

Another option may be to run a D1100 directly to your MC452 through the unused input. This would be inconvenient and require you to manually select the input on the amp. Remember the volume control on the D1100 is not of the same quality as any of the dedicated stereo preamps.

I don’t think upgrading to a pair of MC601’s would give you the same bang for the buck as a preamp.

Most importantly I would suggest getting the MX122 out of the two channel chain.

I'd have to agree with what the others have suggested regarding a pre-amp/dac for two channel. I'd suggest being on the look out for a C2300 as it doesn't have an internal DAC. This way you can simply upgrade DACs as the technology improves. The C2300 is a fantastic tube pre-amp and I'm sure you can find a good deal on the used market.

Can you expand on what you mean when you say the volume control on the D1100 is not of the same quality as any of the dedicated stereo pre amps?
