Don, I am so sorry to hear this - it has to be heartbreaking to see especially since you and Yolanda nurtured Smokey from a few weeks old.
I had two cats (one now), that at times were aggressive towards each other. They were from the same litter so they knew each other since birth - no real territorial disputes. But if there was a cat outside the house, they would see or hear it - and then tear into each other! The vet called it transference. I hope you can work it out safely and humanely for all involved. Ian's idea of finding a willing farmer is an interesting one. |

Sorry to hear about it. I know from experience that an angry cat is close kin to a chainsaw!

Get rid of the talking dog and visit your vet. Meds may be necessary to calm smokey down for a while. A good vet can help you through this hopefully.

This happened to a good friend of mine after owning a loving peaceful cat for years.
The first attack put him in Duke hospital... The second attack was even worse. The cat had to be put down. Please don't take too many chances here. |

I had this happen and we bit the bullet and grinned and persevered. Two of our four at that time didn't get along and it wasn't pretty. One passed and that partly solved it. But others were on edge and it took a lot of patience, love and playing with them and patience. (yes I still have a few scars ). I think the biggest thing is don't exhibit fear with them because they can sense that. They don't lose that edge right away and it may take a little time. Maybe you need to reinforce some positive behavior by playing with him and getting his prey cycle under control. Then perhaps some of his favorite treats to reward his good behavior.

I saw this happen once after a cat was declawed. This hasn't happened recently has it? Go see your vet.

Right after I thought that was the trigger it went in the garage. I'm thinking Yolanda may have hit the button without realizing it while she was girft wrapping it, see dosn't recall. I made this assumption after I make it talk and he want nuts again. With me I backed off once I hep my ground and said STOP in a stern voice a few times. He proceeded to go around the corner and was fairly calm within 10-15 minutes. He would shy away from me for a bit longer but at one point came to visit me in my recliner. I went to bed and then the late night event.

Don,
Does Smokey have fleas? If he is an outdoor cat at all, it is very likely he does. With the very warm weather here in NorCal the last few days, the fleas may be biting him a lot and driving him a bit batty. Fleas become way more active when it is really hot, and will bite much more frequently. I would take him in to the vet and see if he has fleas, and get them treated. My guess is as soon as it cools down or you get the fleas treated, this behavior will stop.
