the d3 series sounds different from the d2, i switched models, so be warned, the sound is different and if you listened to d3 series and you liked it, don't expect the same from the d2 series.
I have heard the whole range of 8xxd3s and like them all. Haven't heard any of the d2s though. upgradivitis didn't kick in then.

I like the gloss black finish and design of the d3s better.

I run my 800 D2's in a room of 5m x 4.15m and 2.55m high.
The distance to the speakers from the listening position is approx. 3.4m.
My ear height at the listening position is approx. 0.83m.

Under these conditions you need to tilt the speakers forward and tow them in about 10 to 15 degrees.

I use Accuphase DG-58 as a room correction.

The 800 plays in another league than the 802 (this is the case since 1980, when after the original 801 the first 802 arrived) and IMHO this fully justifies the price difference.

Subwoofer only if you are an addicted home cinema fan. Unnecessary for music listening.

The D3's are a big step forward compared to the D2's. Naturalness, transparency, more like the real thing. But caution: you need absolute top electronics and cables to make D3's shine, especially the 800D3.

My room is about same but with a higher cathedral ceiling. I have 803 D2s and am fully satisfied. I tend to think that, for music only (no HT), a good floorstanding speaker should be embarrassed to require the support of a sub.

I wonder how much 800d2s will be 2nd hand. Also, the size..wifey probably will object. Is it better sounding than the 802d3s?

Good suggestion though. Food for thought.
Tell her she needs to get with the program.

You don't limit her hobbies do you?

Really, just how much more space does the model you want take up? I'm positive all your furniture will still be in the same place.

I am curious as to why you would make that statement.

The part about the necessity for a sub? Because I believe that to be the case. A genuinely 'good' floorstander should perform such that, for 2-channel music, a sub is not necessary. I also believe most speaker manufacturers agree and design their speakers accordingly.

I would disagree with you on a number of issues. That being the one size fits all doesn't always apply. I. E. How about room size. My 7 Ts go down to 28 HZ. But, in my room which is 34x23 ft., I need bass reinforcement. Does that mean they were designed incorrectly?

I used 803D3 for a year. Great speaker, but not for a room as big as yours. Currently own 802D3 and 800D2 in separate systems. You best choice is 802 D3 out of those you mentioned. Of course 800D3 would be the best, but it was not mentioned as a choice.
