I really like those pixxx!
I'm not much for tinkering, I prefer a professional setup- especially something as critical as a TT setup. Needless to say, my Linn dealer here in Dallas does as good a job as my previous dealer in San Antonio. When you go for a upgrade I recommend you do the same. A good dealer will also check pickup alignment on a oscilloscope after mounting it with the correct protractor.

I think you made a smart move, nice write up and pictures too. This is one of those setups that can really let you enjoy vinyl, good luck with it all.

The only thing I take apart and put back together consists of four numbers, 1911.

I plan on getting an oscilloscope too... I'm taking this seriously!

I still do that too, just for cleaning purposes though. Modified my first 1911 as much as I could, it was one hell of a Springfield.

Jeff, just checked my VTA and I was off by 1.5mm or so from neutral. I ripped the whole thing apart, set my VTA with your method and got it all back together perfect again in under 40 min including a whole cart setup. I'm starting to get the feel for it.
The table sprang to life dynamically. Wow, these things are tweaky for sure. A few mm of VTA and the sound changes more than you'd get between 2 different CD players.

If anyone is inspired by a Clearaudio table, give Jeff (A/V Solutions) a call or PM him, he knows his analog stuff and he is a Clearaudio dealer. We've chatted for hours on the telephone before, Jeff really knows audio.

Tektronix? You could also use a vintage McIntosh MPI -4- it's a multipurpose instrument as well.

Looks good Serge, cut the index card so it's only a few inches wide as it's much easier to move around.........Also make sure your pivit to spindle is 222mm as I thought the pic prior showed it a bit more.......Your gonna be a pro in no time

Pivot to spindle is exactly 222mm. I double checked that already. So is it normal for VTA to affect the bass and highs if only changed by a few millimeters? I swear the 1.5mm change brought on a whole different sound, more immediate and much more bass definition. I haven't even tried different tracking force yet...

Serge, If you didn't already know this but tail up = more high freq and tail down gives you more bottom end.......set level for a few days as the cart will need to settle in a bit then raise or lower to your liking, you will need to reset your VTF every time you make a VTA adjustment. Have fun
