Recently I flew non-stop, Tokyo to Boston. Took off at 6:00 PM Tokyo time, 13 airs in the air (JAL, very nice flight), landed 6:01 PM same day in Boston. A one minute flight, by the clock. For some strange reason I was sleepy a bit early that night.
No actually you lose a work day when flying west to east across the US. If you take a 7:30am flight from SF to DTW or LGA it is about a 5 hour flight plus you lose 3 hours. You just wasted the Friday work day. You arrive in the east about 3:30pm. By the time you get your car and get to the office it is about 5pm.

Now flying from DTW to Europe you get a days work in before you leave for a overnight to say Frankfurt. Sleep on the plane and you can still get at least 6 hours of work in when you arrive.

Both flights you describe are west to east. Basically, you are either flying with the sun or against the sun (or to the Caribbean, which is far better).
The DTW-Europe flight is no different than the SFO-BOS 'redeye'. Work all day on the west coast, take the 10 PM SFO departure, fly through the night, land at 6 am in Boston or NYC and work all day on the east coast. Endless fun.

Now I remember what I kicked my soul-sucking corporate job to the curb in 2016.
